Allan Mackie log house construction records

The Mackie papers document the involvement of Bernard Allan Mackie and his wife Mary with log house construction, 1971-1983. The collection consists of correspondence, brochures, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, books and photographs relating to courses and speeches on log house construction given by Mackie at the College of New Caledonia, and elsewhere in British Columbia and Canada, to the B. Allan Mackie School of Log Building, established near Prince George in 1975, and to the Mackies' publishing venture, Log House Publishing Company. Of particular interest is the Log Building Inventory ; forms distributed by the Mackies around 1980 and filled in by people from all parts of Canada who had built log houses. The completed forms are often accompanied by photographs and letters.

The collection is of some interest for the technical information on log building it contains and as a source for the architectural historian. It is also valuable for the light it sheds on the buildings of the Mackie's and their students on the benefits to man of the use of natural products and on various social and environmental issues. In this aspect the records may be of some interest to historians of the environmental movement of the 1970s.

Canadian inventory of historic buildings surveys and photos

  • GR-4119
  • Series
  • 1970-1989

This series consists of records created for the Canadian Inventory of Historical Buildings (CIHB) for buildings in British Columbia. The records were created and assembled by the provincial Heritage Conservation Branch from approximately 1970-1989, however, some files include originals or copies of records created much earlier, dating back to the late 1800s.

CIHB was established in 1970 to record and photograph examples of pre-1914 architecture in Canada. This was later expanded to include buildings constructed prior to 1945. The CIHB was under direction of the federal government’s Architectural History Branch, National Historic Parks and Sites Directorate, and was a major resource centre on Canadian architecture.

The inventory was designed as a computer-based survey to permit the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to evaluate a building, or group of buildings, by comparing it with others of similar character. Over 200,000 buildings were recorded as representative examples of Canada’s architecture, but their inclusion in the inventory did not necessarily indicate historical or architectural merit. Buildings were recorded using standardized paper forms completed by volunteers and ministry staff across the province. These forms were then entered into the computer database. This series contains a printout of this data.

Each building generally had at least one completed form and an accompanying photo or negative of the building taken at the time of survey. Files may also contain photos of interiors and exteriors of buildings taken as part of the survey, slides, negatives, historical photos, maps, articles, newspaper clippings, correspondence, research notes, drawings, architectural plans and other research materials related to the history of specific buildings.

The records cover all parts of the province and are divided into the following regional districts (RD):

RD1 Alberni-Clayoquot
RD2 Bulkley-Nechako
RD3 Capital Regional District (CRD)
RD4 Cariboo
RD4A [and RD5] Central Coast
RD6 Central Kootenay
RD7 Central Okanagan
RD8 Columbia-Shuswap
RD9 Comox-Strathcona
RD10 Cowichan Valley
RD11 [and RD24?] Dewdney-Alouette
RD12 East Kootenay
RD13 Greater Vancouver (GVRD)
RD14A Fraser Valley
RD15 Fraser-Fort George
RD15A Kitimat-Stikine
RD16 Kootenay-Boundary
RD18 Mt Waddington
RD19 Nanaimo
RD20 North Okanagan
RD21 Okanagan-Similkameen
RD22 Peace River
RD22A Powell River
RD23 Skeena-Queen Charlotte Islands (QCI) [Haida Gwaii]
RD25 Squamish-Lillooet
RD26 Sunshine Coast
RD27 Thompson-Nicola

Most of the records are arranged by the district, then alphabetically by the name of the city or town, then alphabetically by the name of the site or street address. Files may contain one building, or multiple buildings located on the same city block or street.

Notes, correspondence, minutes and research reports

Dr. Margaret Ormsby (1909-1996) was a distinguished B.C. historian and a member of the Provincial Heritage Advisory Board

MS-2009 consists of notes, correspondence, minutes, and reports collected by Dr. Margaret Ormsby during the course of her work as a member of the Provincial Heritage Advisory Board.

The Provincial Heritage Advisory Board was established by the provincial government in 1978. Its role, as defined by the Heritage Conservation Act (28 Eliz. 2, c. 165, s. 9), was to advise the Minister of the Provincial Secretary on the implementation of policy. Specifically, the Board was consulted to establish criteria for the designation of heritage sites, and the granting of permits necessary for altering sites or objects which were deemed to have "historic, architectural, archaeological, palaeontological or scenic significance." The Board normally consisted of thirteen members, representing educational institutions, business, and government. Members were appointed at the pleasure of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

The Provincial Heritage Advisory Board was abolished in June 1983. Duties of the Board were transferred to the director of the Heritage Conservation Branch.
