History

The Ministry of Highways and Public Works was established in 1975 under its first name the Dept. of Highways and Public Works (OIC 3842/75). In 1976, the Department of Highways Act was repealed and the Department of Public Works Act was amended as the Department of Highways and Public Works Act (SBC 1976, c. 18). The Dept. of Highways and Public Works amalgamated the functions of its predecessors, the Dept. of Public Works (established in 1908) and the Dept. of Highways (established in 1955). It was responsible for all matters relating to the acquisition, construction, repair, maintenance, alteration, improvement and operation of Government buildings, highways and public works. Later in 1976, the department was renamed the Ministry of Highways and Public Works (OIC 3199/76). In 1978, the Ministry of Highways and Public Works was renamed the Ministry of Transportation, Communication and Highways (OIC 3018/78) when it acquired the transportation, commercial transport, and communications functions from the Ministry of Energy, Transport and Communications (1976-1978). The name was changed again in 1979 to the Ministry of Transportation and Highways (OIC 2957/79) when the communications function was transferred to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. In 2001, the ministry was renamed the Ministry of Transportation (OIC 565/01), retaining the functions of railways, transit, commercial transport, ferries, highways, motor carriers, and motor vehicles.
