B government name
A public utility established April 17, 1945 by the John Hart government to provide electricity to rural areas not supplied by the province's main electrical producer, BC Electric Rwy Co. BC Power built and operated several plants around the province including on the Puntledge River near Courtenay and the John Hart development near Campbell River. By 1961 it served over 200 communities, some with small diesel generators. It was amalgamated with the recently nationalized British Columbia Electric Company on March 31, 1962 to form British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority.
