The item consists of a reel of 16 mm film which includes the following:
"The Glades, March '71": The Glades is a five-acre woodland garden in Surrey, created by Murray and Lydia Stephen. "Potatoes, Aug. '67": Sowing and picking potatoes by hand. Harvesting potatoes by machine. Peaches: handling, treatment, sorting, and testing of peaches at the Oliver Co-Op and Monashee Co-Op.

The item consists of a reel of 16 mm film which includes the following:

  1. Soil mixing. Preparing a garden: organic matter, fertilizers, sawdust, wood chips. Earthworms. Lime.
  2. Manufacture of step ladders (for fruit picking) at Kal Craft Ladders in Oyama.
  3. Ferry crossing a river. Views of a farm: house, garden, weather instruments (for Dept. of Transport); poultry, pigs. Milking cows and sampling milk. Calves. Cleaning all the milk-handling equipment. Sign: "Ayrshires, B.U. Schilling, Darfield, B.C.

the item is a travelogue film. "An animated curtain rises to reveal waves washing in on a sandy beach. [Long shot of] Hatley Park castle from pond at bottom the garden, a rowboat passing by. "Princess Kathleen", CPR ferry, arrives in Victoria's Inner Harbour with visitors crowding the decks. [Close-up of] passengers along the rails as ship passes. Empress Hotel over the after deck of the "Kathleen". Passengers leave the ship, down gangways into a shed. City of sunshine

The item is a travelogue film. 'Sunshine and flowers - thus it is that one thinks of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Its enterprising business district is only overshadowed by its beautiful gardens. Such places of interest as Beacon Hill Park, the Mayor's Garden, the Dominion observatory (which houses the second largest telescope in the world) and the Butchart Gardens, are famed across the continent.' Scenes include a map of Victoria and Vancouver with a line shoring the ferry route, and an aerial view of Victoria, Inner Harbour and CPR ferry entering. Parliament Buildings. Floyd Fairclough interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1975-05-29 SUMMARY: Floyd A. Fairclough, director of property development for the University of Victoria, discusses the gift of land and plants from Mrs. Jeanne Simpson of Lake Cowichan. He explains that this was a gift before death, not a bequest. Mrs. Simpson, who was widowed in 1958, was to have quiet and undisturbed life occupancy. She had suggested that the name "Stoker" be used for the property. Discussion of the university's plans for the plants and for development on the Lake Cowichan site. The university has about 400 pages of correspondence.

Garden rendezvous

The item consists of three film elements that made up an educational film in 1950. It shows the landscaped homes and gardens of Vancouver and Victoria, and how such landscaping effects can be achieved by homeowners. The film is hosted by Cecil Solly of Seattle (seen at BC Electric's "Garden Rendezvous" at the PNE Exhibition Park), who for many years did a gardening show sponsored by BC Electric on radio station CKWX.

John Bosher interview

SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): A gardener remembers RECORDED: Sidney (B.C.), 1981-08 SUMMARY: John Bosher was already well schooled in gardening techniques when he arrived in North Saanich in 1919. As the years passed, he gained more experience, and although he spent over 30 years employed as a plant pathologist, his private garden was never neglected. Local garden clubs, horticultural societies, the Saanichton Fair, and many friends have benefitted from his expertise. At various times he has contributed to the community as school trustee. Village councillor, and a member of the water board.

Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Pinder interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1962-06-21 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Pinder (nee Irving) recalls the early planting of broom on Vancouver Island. She talks about her grandfather, W.O. Hamley, his brother, Sir Edward Hamley; Dr. J.S. Helmcken; the Pemberton family; riding and driving horses; Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie; her father, Judge Irving; horse racing in Victoria; paper chases; and old houses and families. TRACK 2: Mrs. Pinder talks about the Pooley family; the Royal Navy; early Vancouver and the Dunsmuir family. Mr. Pinder talks about his great uncle, Sir Joseph Trutch, his father was an engineer with the C.P.R.; his father's work for Dunsmuir, and his bringing out the Confederation papers in 1871; the Fairfield estate; Point Ellice Bridge disaster; his father's survey of Port Moody; recreation in Victoria and early Vancouver. Records with regard to reconstruction of Government House

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of the Provincial Secretary between 1957 and 1963 with regard to the reconstruction of Government House. The records include correspondence with donors, suppliers and government agencies regarding the rebuilding and refurnishing of Government House after the fire of 1957, including the redesign of the gardens. There are six photographs showing a donated silk carpet, artwork and chairs. The series also includes six plans showing aspects of the house and gardens (including layout and names of plants). The plans have been given the following registration numbers: 24112B, 24113B, 24115B, 24117B, 24114C and 24116C.
