Biographical history

Humphrey Nicholas Wolferstan Toms was born in Oak Bay, B.C. on June 28, 1913, the son of Lewis William Toms and Edith Margaret Gordon.

Toms was a plant pathologist at the Agricultural Research Centre at the University of British Columbia. He was also a genealogist who conducted research in the United Kingdom and the United States. Toms met Emily Carr in 1933 and remained friends with her until her death.

He died in Vancouver on August 9, 1983.
