History
Swiss Canadian textile artist Maria Katherina Krahnstoever was married to alpine climber Wilhelm Felix Krahnstoever. They moved from Switzerland to Summerland, BC in 1932 after visiting the province in 1928.
Known by her friends as Katja, Krahnstoever was the center of a creative community in the region. She would invite fellow artists, including PM Richie, to her lakefront property where people could picnic, paint, and discuss the arts. Several artists fondly remember her as a mentor.
Krahnstoever is known to have created over 300 textiles in her lifetime, some of which were exhibited in Zurrich. Her art remained unexhibited in Canada until after her death.
