Scope and content
The series consists of over 500 legal agreements generated through the establishment and management of the Chemainus sawmill between 1879 and 1947. Some agreements are accompanied by correspondence, maps, reports and plans. Agreements have been maintained in their original sub-series and order. This series is the second of four series in the Chemainus Sawmill fonds and consists of eight sub-series: A. Historic agreements, 1879-1942, 50 files. These agreements seem to have been copied for posterity and include some items pre-dating the Victoria Lumber and Manufacturing Company. Some original documents are included. The arrangement of this sub-series appears to date from after 1946. Historically important figures like the Rockefellers are involved in some agreements. B. A-series agreements, 1914-1943, 104 files. These agreements have no obvious coherent arrangement. They include purchasing agreements, land deeds, petitions and other types of agreements and many are accompanied by correspondence, maps and reports. The 44A series pertains to land sales to local residents at the Chemainus townsite during the mid-1930s. C. C-series agreements, 1910-1944, 74 files. These agreements are primarily conveyances (land transfers). D. M-series agreements, 1922-1944, 42 files. This sub-series consists primarily of mortgages, often accompanied by plans, but includes other agreements as well, such as indentures of release. E. Insurance policies, 1946-1947, ca. 120 files. Sub-series consists of numerically ordered insurance policies, primarily dating from 1947, the year after H. R. MacMillan acquired Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing. F. Expired Agreements, 1906-1932, 43 files. These marked agreements originated in other sub-series. G. Other numbered agreements, 1914-1942, 27 files. This incohesive set of documents includes conveyances, sales, contracts and other agreements. H. Unsorted agreements, 1892-1943, 51 files.
