Brian Nicol collection of railroad and ship sounds

The item consists of copies of recorded sounds of railroad locomotives, ships, and their acoustic environments, originally recorded on Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland between 1966 and 1978. It includes several sounds which have since become "extinct;". These tape copies are compilations condensed from the donor's originals and copied in 1981. Includes recordings of the Royal Hudson #2860 steam locomotive (T3848:0001-0003); railway yard switching and freight trains, North Vancouver (T3848:0003); Provincial Museum train steam locomotive #1077, steam donkey engine, steam locomotive #3716, and locomotives at the Cowichan Forest Museum (T3848:0003); shipyard sounds, various B.C. Ferries in Active Pass, the steamship "Princess Marguerite", and various ship's whistles at First Narrows and in Burrard Inlet (T3848:0004).

Canadian heritage series, volume 1 : Sounds of steam

SUMMARY: Field recordings of two steam locomotives. TRACK 1: Former Canadian Pacific Railway Class H1e, No. 2860 (Royal Hudson class). Built at Montreal, 1940; retired in 1958. Purchased by B.C. government in; 1974, and used for excursion traffic on the British Columbia Railway between North Vancouver and Squamish. TRACK 2: Former Canadian Pacific Railway Class N2b, No. 3716. Built in Montreal 1912; retired in 1958. Puchased by the B.C. government in 1974 and used on the British Columbia Museum Train, for private rail excursions, and in motion pictures.

The item is an audio recordings of the Cowichan Valley Forest Museum. Includes sounds of locomotives and logging machinery (recorded from the cow catcher of the locomotive and beside various equipment) at the Cowichan Valley Forest Museum. Gerry Wellburn and Hudson Blake provide the commentary. Recording made on the day before the museum opened to the public. A special invitation to the Vintage Car Club of Victoria.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1969-10-06 SUMMARY: This recording captures the sounds of the trans-continental train from the east arriving at the Blue River Divisional Point at midnight, October 6, 1969. Imbert Orchard describes the setting and speaks with the train crew. Sounds on the platform; the approaching train; the train engine; brakes; whistles; bells; steam [?], and noises of the rolling stock can be heard. The sound of an unidentified steam engine is also on this tape.

Victoria Inner Harbour during tourist season

The item is an audio recording of taped sounds in the Victoria Inner Harbour area during the summer tourist season, 24 August 1964. Waiting on the old CPR dock for arrival of the "Princess Marguerite"; aircraft flying over; whistle of incoming steamer "Princess Marguerite" docking at the CPR dock; squeak of tow lines being tightened; scrunch of ship against pier; gangplank dropped; cars driving off the ship; taxi picking up tourists; stroll along the causeway with tourists; Tally-ho hawkers and general sounds; offer of a rose to a visitor; bell of the train "Dunrobin", out for display on the E & N track; talking to crew of the "Dunrobin" at E & N. Up Wharf Street to the Maritime Museum. At the seaside.
