Administrative history

In 1862, Edgar Marvin opened a hardware store after arriving in Victoria from California. The firm’s name was changed to Marvin and Tilton in 1884 when Edward Gibbon Tilton became a partner in the business. The firm dealt in general hardware, iron and steel, cordage, chains, mill and building supply, and shelf hardware. Throughout the 1880s, the shop was located at the corner of Bastion and Wharf streets. By 1891, it was estimated that the firm did $150,000 in wholesale and retail trade a year, and the Victoria Illustrated remarked that it was the oldest such business in British Columbia. In 1897, the business was sold to A B Fraser, and the name changed to Walter Fraser and Company Limited.
