British Columbia. Ministry of Education (1979-1996) (1979-1996)

Biographical history

The Ministry of Education was established in 1979 as the successor to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (OIC 2957/79). The ministry was responsible for ensuring that students enrolled in elementary and secondary schools have access to quality and cost-effective education and for setting standards for the overall direction of the education system. It does this by managing finance and faciloities, program direction development and implementation, student access and achievement, teaching performance, and through system evaluation and public accountability. In 1996, all functions not relating to labour were transferred from the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour to the Ministry of Education to form the Ministry of Education, Skills and Training (OIC 199/96).

Scope and content

The series consists of various videotapes transferred to the archives from the B.C. Department of Education. Most of items are educational television progrrams produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC Vancouver) and sponsored by the Department of Education's Audio-Visual Services Branch. These include six episodes of the series "Great Battles in History" (1967)), five episodes of "Ciivilizations Lost and Found" (1969), six episodes of "The world of work" (1972), and one episode from "The shortest distance" (1972). The series also includes two videos produced by the British Columbia School Trustees Association for the School Boards of British Columbia (1979-1980).

[As a temporary measure, two film descriptions have also been attached to this series. These three 16mm film reels are part of accession G81-057. This accession comprises records of Ministry of Education, Provincial Coordinator of the Young Voyageurs Programme (1961-1976), including textual records and photographs that have not yet been described.]
