Biographical history

Gladys, or Gwladys, Woodward was born in 1885 in Gloucester England. It is unknown when she moved to Victoria; she offered watercolour classes in the Victoria Times Colonist in 1928.

Woodward was an active member of the Island Arts and Crafts Society, participating in group exhibitions between 1932 and 1943. She was one of a number of signatories to boycott the National Gallery of Canada in 1932 because of existing exhibition and purchase policies related to Canadian artists.

Gladys Woodward is buried at Ross Bay Cemetary.

Custodial history

This painting is one of 13 donated by Derek Reimer and Maxine Charlesworth in 2015. Gwladys Woodward was his great aunt. The painting was a gift to Derek Reimer and Maxine Charlesworth from the Gwladys Woodward estate, ca. 1976.

The item consists of one watercolour painting by Gwladys Woodward (also spelled Gladys) . The title of the painting is not known but depicts water, mountains, a building, and pilings, possibly near Port Alberni.
