History
James Arthur (Jim) Nielsen was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on August 5, 1938. He moved to Richmond, BC during his high school years. In 1959, he began work as an announcer at Victoria’s CJVI radio station before moving on to posts at CJOR, CFUN, and CFAX.
During the 1974 Federal election, he ran unsuccessfully under the Progressive Conservative banner for the Burnaby-Seymour riding. The following year, he ran in the provincial election as a member of the Social Credit party and was elected as MLA for Richmond, a post he held until 1986. Nielsen served for three years as the province’s first Minister of Environment, after which time he spent a further three years as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. Following this, he served as Minister of Health for five years. During his time in the Legislative Assembly, Nielsen was also given the extra duty as Minister of Human Resources.
Between 1987 and 1989, Nielsen served as the chairman of the Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia. Following his withdrawal from politics, Nielsen worked as a public speaker and newspaper columnist for outlets in Richmond, Kelowna, and Vancouver. He served as a Peachland municipal councillor between 1999 and 2002, and again from 2005 to 2008. He died in New Westminster on April 4, 2018.
