History

Frederick B. Pemberton was born in Victoria, B.C. on April 26, 1865, the eldest son of Joseph Despard Pemberton and Theresa Jane Despard Pemberton (née Grautoff). At the University College of London, he studied civil and mechanical engineering, graduating in 1886. He had his credentials as a notary public, justice of the peace, surveyor and miner. He established the partnership of Pemberton & Son, real estate and financial brokers, with his father, in Victoria, in 1887. He married Mary Ann Dupont Bell on November, 29, 1893. Two sons, Despard and Warren, were killed in the First World War. Pemberton was active as a farmer, and in support of schools and charitable causes in Victoria. His son-in-law, Henry Cuthbert Holmes, succeeded him as president of Pemberton & Son in 1933. F.B. Pemberton died at his home, “Mountjoy,” in Oak Bay, B.C, November 7, 1947, at the age of 82.
