The file consists of five reels of unedited film footage/out-takes. Contains footage of commercial salmon and halibut trolling; purse seining; gill netting; fish ladders (Hells Gate); cannery interiors; tagging salmon; salmon spawning; salmon eggs and fry in laboratory; Adams River salmon run; hatchery scenes. Also includes: aerial views of the B.C. coastline; docks at Zeballos; De Havilland Dragon Rapide passenger plane on floats (registration CF-AYE).
It includes some footage from the film "Commercial salmon trolling off the British Columbia Coast."

The item consists of three reels of industrial film. Shows the salmon spawning cycle, methods of commercial purse-seine and gillnet fishing, and processing of the catch at the cannery; includes footage of an "Iron Chink" salmon butchering machine. Filmed at unspecified locations on the BC coast.

[Fish bonanza -- reaping a sea harvest]

Newsreel tootage. The record commercial salmon season of 1958 is illustrated with a sequence showing a seiner setting its net and hauling it in, brailing the salmon aboard, and unloading it onto a packer ship at the BC Packers wharf in Steveston. Gill netter feleet at anchor.

Footage. Fishing boats in harbour with snow-covered mountains near water in background; repairing nets; fishing boats underway (including "Western Ranger" and "Western Monarch"); herring catch in seine-net; brailing herring into boats with dip-net.

Herring hunt

Docudrama. Commercial herring fishing on the BC coast. The story focuses on one seiner (the "Western Girl" from Vancouver) and her crew's attempts to reach their quota before fishing is closed. Nelson Bros. Fisheries Ltd. took part in the production. Actor Bruno Gerussi makes his film debut as a crewman on the seiner.

The herring hunters

Industrial film. Shows purse-seining for herring and pilchards off the BC coast, including the different seining methods used. Pilchards (i.e., Pacific sardines) are caught on the open Pacific by the seiner "Tatchu" and the tender "Westisle". Herring seining footage includes use of echo sounder and "feeling wire" to locate herring schools. Seining in a coastal inlet with the seiner "Southisle" and the tender "Wawanesa". The sensitive sockeye

The item is a release print of a documentary film from ca. 1958. It depicts the life cycle of the sockeye salmon and the work of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission in ensuring the survival of that cycle and of BC's salmon fishing industry.
