Western radio drama : ASCRT conference panel

The item consists of copies of audio recordings from a panel discussion on radio drama in western Canada, from the 1979 conference of the Association for the Study of Canadian Radio and Television, held at the University of Saskatchewan. The panel members are: playwright Gwen Pharis Ringwood, who discusses writing radio drama in the 1930s and 1940s; critic and radio documentary producer Alan Yates, who discusses the series "Jake and the Kid", written by W.O. Mitchell for CBC Radio; and former CBC radio producer and Supervisor of Radio Arts Gerald Newman, now a drama professor at SFU, who discusses the theory and practice of radio drama production on tape.

Men of the harvest

SUMMARY: "CBC Tuesday Night" was a multi-part series that featured performances of classical music, opera and drama, as well as readings, documentaries and talks. The series ran from Oct 26, 1965 into the 1970;s in the 7:30 to 11:00 p.m. time slot. Its predecessor of the same format was "CBC Sunday Night". This episode, "Men Of The Harvest", dramatizes the story of the English missionary William Duncan and his work among the Tsimshian Indians of northern B.C. The script was by George Woodcock. A.D. "Cowboy" Kean papers

Correspondence, newspaper cuttings, typescripts, and production memoranda relating to the life and career of A.D. "Cowboy" Kean. Many of the documents in this collection pertain to the making of "Policing the Plains" (1924-27), a dramatic silent film about the exploits of the North West Mounted Police. The collection also includes newsprint copies of Kean's popular yarns on cowboy and ranch life which appeared in the Toronto STAR WEEKLY (1929-1936), and scripts of some of Kean's radio plays about his experiences in western Canada.

SUMMARY: "Canadian School Broadcasts" was a series of educational radio programs designed to supplement existing school curriculum. The majority of broadcasts were organized and administered at the provincial ;level by the Departments of Education and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. However, many programs were produced by national organizations. The series went on the air in March 1938 as a twice-w;eekly broadcast; then it was expanded to daily broadcasts. (1) This episode, "The Last Portage And The Height Of Land", is adapted from the journals of poet and civil servant Duncan Campbell Scott (1862;-1947). Scott, a poet and short story writer, became the Deputy Superintendent of the Department of Indian Affairs in 1923. This program, adapted by Peter Haworth, features Scott's Northern journey as a member of the James Bay Treaty Commission in the summer of 1905. "There are distinct differences of style and point of view among Duncan Campbell's Scott's personalities as Poet, Diarist and Official. Therefore these roles will be played by three actors, each representing an aspect of the poet." The Bluebell incident

The item is an audio recording. It is an historical drama enacted by residents of the Kootenays. The story is narrated by the character of William Baillie-Groman, a freelance engineer, who relates the background to the Bluebell incident that occurred in the Kootenay District in the 1880s. Four miners, including Robert Sproule, staked claims to mines but abandoned them, and claim stakers from the Ainsworth Company took over. The dispute resulted in two court cases and a favourable decision for Sproule, but complications continued, including a murder and another court case.
