History
Francis Henry Shepherd, born in England in 1856 or 1857, left England in 1876 or 1877 and eventually settled in Nanaimo in 1879 where he worked for the Vancouver Coal Mining & Land Company and as an underground manager. Married to Jane Holden of Nanaimo in Victoria in 1880, he worked and lived abroad in the late 1880s. By the early 1900s he was back in BC and in the 1910s worked as a land surveyor and as Chief Inspector of Mines. He resigned from that office to run as a Member of Parliament for Nanaimo in 1911, where he served until 1917. As a MP he toured the front lines in 1916; his son Francis Holden Shepherd had also enlisted that year. After leaving public office, he worked for the federal Public Works department as superintendent of dredges until he retired in 1922. His last major project in that position was the draining of Sumas Lake. He moved to and lived out the rest of his life in Creston where he died in 1938.
