Scope and content

The item consists of an audio interview with Ursula Jupp made in 1983 at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia in Victoria, B.C. Tape 1 and tape 2 track 1 were recorded on May 24 and tape 2, track 2 was recorded on June 14.

Tape summaries:
T4088:0001: track 1: Ursula Jupp came to Canada in 1911, going first to Sedgewick, Alta. and then to Victoria in 1912. Mother died in 1915 in Victoria. Father ran a daffodil farm in Gordon Head. Father came to Alberta to grow wheat. Tells of trip across Canada to Alberta in a colonist's coach. Describes home in Britain, kitchen very clearly. Describes homes in Victoria and Sedgewick.

Track 2: Home in Victoria; (Gordon Head). Tells of Chinese labourers that lived on the farm and their jobs. They lived in lean-to's. They had live-in housekeepers. After the War, the Chinese help was replaced with college-females. Describes her chores as a child. Gordon Head was short of water, so they left the same water in the tub for 3 days.

T4088:0002: track 1: Ursula Jupp recalls eating extensively from their own produce, fruit and vegetables. In winter, kept potatoes in straw and eggs in "water glass". She earned 5 cents a week delivering milk from their cow. Made their own butter and many other milk products. Almost all "garbage" was used. Her mother passed away when she was 13 so she did not learn to cook from her. Chinese had no dietary influence on their home.

Track 2: Ursula Jupp set up her own home in 1923. Took domestic science in Normal School (cooking), thinks that they got an extra certificate for taking it. Learned hints that she continues to use. Taught for two years, and was afraid to let the trustees know that she was engaged. Taught elementary sewing. In the thirties she earned; $3.50 a day substitute teaching. Talks about different kinds of stoves they had, preferred oil.
