143rd Battalion boarding ship

Photograph depicts the 143rd Battalion (BC Bantams) on the docks of the CPR station at Victoria's Inner Harbour as they board a ship. They can be seen here carrying their full equipment kits. Civilians and soldiers line the streets around the dock. On the side of the building is an ad for the British Columbia Telephone Co. Ltd. The BC Bantams were initially going to be sent overseas as a railway construction battalion but were later broken up for reinforcements.

There was an impressive turn out of civilians sending off the Bantams, resulting in large crowds gathering at the docks. After a period of delays, the BC Bantams were finally given approval to depart for the front in February 1917 as a railway construction battalion. This order was later cancelled and the 143rd Battalion was broken up for reinforcements.
