Biographical history
Robert Weir arrived in Victoria with his family of four sons and two daughters on the Norman Morison in January 1853. He came to the colony to be head stockman for the Hudson's Bay Company. Soon after his arrival, he began to buy land near William Head in Metchosin, and eventually owned approximately 1000 acres. After a few years, he moved to Metchosin from Victoria with his family and farmed there, raising sheep and later, cattle. Robert Weir died on April 2nd 1894 at age 85. Two of his sons, William and John, died in Metchosin without children and a third, Hugh, moved to California. Robert's youngest son, Adam, remained on a portion of the land, as did his son, Gavin and Gavin's son, Ronald J. Weir. Adam Weir died on March 30th, 1897 at age 55.
Custodial history
Records in MS-2896 were previously catalogued as part of the BC Archives old catalogue in the A/E/Or3 classification and were probably purchased from John Windham O'Reilly in 1964. Records in MS-1128 were donated to the BC Archives by Ronald J. Weir in 1979 and 1980. Records in MS-2525 were loaned for filming to the BC Archives in 1980.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of a diary relating to the Weir family farming activities in the Metchosin area on Vancouver Island, British Columbia from 1866 to 1870. This diary was written by Adam and Hugh Weir, the sons of Robert Weir. There is an edited transcript of this diary prepared by Ronald J. Weir in January 1974, with two maps showing property. Fonds also includes: records related to property from 1865, 1891, 1895; a transcript of a diary of a gold rush trip to the Cassiar area by Adam Weir in 1874; and genealogical notes on the Evans family.
