Established December 2, 1953, the British Columbia Toll Highways and Bridges Authority changed its name to the British Columbia Ferry Authority, on April 1, 1964. That name changed on January 1, 1977 to British Columbia Ferry Corporation.

Established December 2, 1953 as the British Columbia Toll Highways and Bridges Authority. Name changed to the British Columbia Ferry Authority, on April 1, 1964.

Over the years, the system’s popularity grew, and in 1970, the “stretch and lift” program was implemented. Existing vessels were cut in half in order to allow for a midsection to be spliced in. Usage of the system continued to grow and the name was changed on January 1, 1977 to British Columbia Ferry Corporation. By 2000, the Corporation reached the half billion passenger mark. That same year, the ability to make reservations online was introduced.

Three years later, in 2003, the Corporation was re-launched as a private company and renamed British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. In March 2009, a Commercial Services division was launched to manage the transportation of goods between Vancouver Island the Mainland.

In 2010, BC Ferries introduced another branch known as BC Ferries Vacations to provide packages and trips up the coast, and a Vacation Centre in downtown Vancouver was opened.

In March 1987 the Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act (No. 3) (S.B.C. 1987, c. 44) instituted a title change from the British Columbia Place Act to the British Columbia Enterprise Corporation Act; British Columbia Place Ltd. was renamed British Columbia Enterprise Corporation. BCEC ceased operations on September 30, 1989.

The Department of Transport and Communications was established in 1959 with the enactment of the Department of Commercial Transport Act (SBC 1959, c. 12). The new department was formed out of the Railway Dept., the Weigh Scale Section of the Dept. of Highways, and the Commercial Vehicle Section of the Motor Vehicle Branch, Dept. of Attorney-General.

In 1959, the mandate of the Dept. of Commercial Transport included responsibility for railways and pipelines, registration and licensing of commercial vehicles; establishing and operating weighing-stations and for the weighing of commercial vehicles; and for issuance, renewal and transfer of licences and permits under the Motor Carrier Act.

In 1973, the name of the department was briefly changed to Dept. of Commercial Transport and Communications (OIC 1742/73) before it was renamed the Dept. of Transport and Communications (Department of Transport and Communications Act, SBC, 1973, c.112). The functions added were the Motor Vehicle Branch, the Data Processing Centre, aircraft operations, government telecommunications services, the Motor Carrier Branch, the Telecommunications Consultants Branch and BC Ferries.

Grainger (family)

Martin Allerdale Grainger was born in London, England, and spent his childhood in Australia. He graduated from Cambridge and spent a number of years in northern B.C., working at placer mining, logging and journalism. In 1908 while in England he wrote "Woodsmen of the West" based on his own experiences. He returned to the forest industry of B.C. in 1910, where he held successive positions as secretary to the Royal Commission on Forestry, Deputy Chief Forester and Chief Forester of British Columbia. After 1920, he ran his own lumbering firm. Grainger died in Vancouver in 1941.
