Abbotsford Airshow, 1975

The item is a film reel of unedited out-takes from 1975. It contains footage of the 1975 Abbotsford Airshow. Includes team aerobatics demonstrations by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds (flying the T-38 Talon) and the Canadian Armed Forces Snowbirds (flying the CT-114 Tutor); solo aerobatics by various single-engined monoplanes and biplanes; fly-pasts by a Vulcan bomber (of the RAF) and an Aurora maritime patrol aircraft; a demonstration fire retardant drop by an airtanker; a Canadian Forces search and rescue team rappelling from a Labrador helicopter; exhibitions by parachutists and a wing walker; static displays of aircraft on the tarmac; and crowd shots.

This footage may be out takes from the BC government travelogue "This is the Place."

[Columbia Coast Mission : M.S. Columbia]

Footage. A record of the Columbia Coast Mission hospital ship "Columbia" on patrol with Canon Alan D. Greene. Depicts the people, places and events encountered: logging operations; community scenes; children; weddings, christenings and church services officiated by Canon Greene. Military personnel are seen at several stops, including personnel from the RCAF and the "Wrens" (Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service), as well as a CWAC (Canadian Women's Army Corps). An RCAF floatplane and a large flying boat are seen -- possibly at Shearwater, a wartime military seaplane base on Denny Island near Bella Bella. The "Syrene I" (formerly the CCM boat "John Antle I") appears briefly. The only positively identified location is Yuculta Landing on Quadra Island.

[MARCOM history]

Compilation. Guns [at Fort Rodd Hill?]. Combined fotage of naval combat, World War One and Two. Seaman wearing cap labelled "HMCS Bonaventure". Air and sea combat: aircraft carrier with planes taking off and helicopter hovering over deck. Submarine. Recent naval exercises with destroyers (one marked #282), helicopter, and missile launcher. Control room with officers, radar screen, etc.

[Military : ships and aircraft demonstration ; the "Bonaventure" and "Provider"]

Television stock shots. In the first section, a crowd watches from Beacon Hill Park as naval vessels and coastal patrol aircraft (including an Argus) maneuver nearby, possibly in some kind of demonstration. The second section shows the supply ship H.M.C.S. "Provider" and the aircraft carrier H.M.C.S. "Bonaventure" underway at sea. "Provider" refuels another naval vessel while they cruise side by side.

[Oyster operations, ca. 1955 ; air base ; miscellany]

Footage. First half of film shows a crew working around a pile of oyster shells, and preparing them to be hung submerged from a raft for oyster propagation. The locale is probably one of the oyster harvesting areas on east coast of Vancouver Island. Remainder of footage is mixed, including shots of U.S. Air Force Globemaster cargo plane and a Pan American Airways airliner (named "Clipper Monarch of the Skies") being serviced at an unidentified airfield. Also brief scenes of an abandoned coastal gun emplacement and the bow of a wrecked ship off a beach. This latter part of the reel may have been shot in California or Hawaii.

[Pilot training]

News item. Footage at beginning shows CF-101 Voodoos on the ground at CFB Comox, and in the air. How pilots are trained to fly these planes, through classroom lectures and in labs where simulated emergency situations are staged. Footage of Voodoo training flights, where pilots are taught what to do when a T-33 invades domestic air space in a mock attack. The CF-101s successfully "scramble" to intercept the T-33s, which then return to their Electronic Warfare Squadron. The CF-101s fly back to their respective bases.

Visit of His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to Vancouver and New Westminster -- May 1939

Special event coverage. "Good long [medium shot of] Royal Hudson Locomotive, 2850, from side. Good [close-up] front of 2850 with scarlet-jacketed, bearskinned guards on either side. Pipe band marching down street lined with people, followed by veterans with red arm bands. 'Inspection of Guard of Honour at Pier C and Procession up Burrard Street through the Welcome Arch.' The inspection is missing, but there are good shots from various angles of the royal car passing through the Welcome Arch. Royal couple en route to and arriving at City Hall, Vancouver, through crowds of people with flags, etc. King and Queen leave City Hall to tumultuous goodbye from crowds. Scenes in Vancouver Harbour as the King and Queen depart for Victoria aboard the CPR ferry 'Princess Marguerite'. The harbour is thronged with small boats waiting for them to pass. Three biplanes fly overhead, low over the Lion's Gate Bridge. The 'Princess Marguerite' sails out under the bridge. King and Queen drive through mobs of people in New Westminster. Veterans pipe band. Children dressed up in May Day costumes are waiting in Queen's Park. The royal couple arrive to a tumultuous welcome. A huge maypole display. Kids perform calisthenics. Crowds at Pattullo Bridge. The King and Queen arrive alongside the CN train and reviewing stand. King and Queen leave car, board train and train leaves, everyone waving frantically." (Colin Browne)
