Diary, June 23 - October 3, 1902, kept by Muskett when he accompanied Dr. C.F. Newcombe who was collecting botanical specimens for the Field Columbian Museum, Chicago, East Coast, Prince of Wales Island (Kasaan Bay), Alaska, Queen Charlotte Islands, and mainland of BC. There is also one loose folded sheet containing four diary pages, 12th - 14th (month not noted) covering stay at Banff on way to Vancouver. Diary also contains "Story of totem pole near Massett", "Story of pole at Massett", "Story of pole at Kayan - second part". Loose pages contain notes on distances between Skidegate and various points and "net making from fireweed". Four photograph albums transferred to Visual Records accession 198602-11.

New Metlakatla Choir

SUMMARY: The New Metlakatla Choir performs Handel's "Holy Art Thou". The recording was made by CFPR when the choir was visiting from New Metlakatla, Alaska, a village on Annette Island south of Ketchikan.

Tourists' souvenir diary of 1909 summer cruise to Alaska on board SS Spokane. Entries by the unidentified diarist begin 16 June with the ship's arrival in Victoria and terminate 27 June with the ships arrival in Vancouver after visiting several Alaska ports including Metlakatla [Metlakahtla] where the visitors were received by William Duncan.

SUMMARY: This special program was broadcast separately from the season's regular "People in Landscape' sub-series. It deals with the days of sealing along the coast of British Columbia, and describes in detail various aspects of the sealing industry. It also includes references to Jack London's book "The Sea Wolf". The voices heard are: Jimmy Newman, Max Lohbrunner, and Noel Robinson.

SUMMARY: This program features the stories of two long canoe journeys -- one in 1868, when a missionary took his bride from Victoria to the Nass in a large Indian canoe; and the second in 1937, when a teenaged girl made a trip all by herself from Anacortes to Ketchikan, Alaska. The voices heard are Agnes Johnson and Betty Carey.
