This series contains letters inward and outward of J.D. Pemberton and B.W. Pearse, Colonial Surveyors. It also includes copies of correspondence with Edward Stamp and Gilbert Malcolm Sproat pertaining to purchases of lands and various agreements on lands at Alberni and Barclay Sound in regard to the establishment and operation of a sawmill and a copper mining company. Includes a map of company land holdings in the Alberni valley.

Alberni Land District lot register

This series consists of an Alberni Land District lot register for lots 1-291 on Vancouver Island. The earliest entries are from 1872 and the volume was superseded by 1947 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1947). The register lists lots in numerical order and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, lease etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. A summary of the auction sale of subdivided lots from the Eastern portion of District Lot 1, is shown on pp. 86-90. The volume contains an alphabetical index of names.

The item is a b&w photograph showing Stamp's Mill at Alberni. It was probably taken by O.C. Hastings in 1879.

Letters to George W. England Lumpliegh

The file consists of two letter written to George W. England Lumpliegh. One from Peter Nicholas (1885) describing the settlement of Alberni, B.C. and the other from H.E. Morgan (1886) describing mineral resources around Sitka and Juneau, Alaska.

The series consists of correspondence; research notes for articles and books; diaries and narratives; financial papers; clippings of articles and reviews; and samples of paper produced by B.C. Paper Manufacturing Company, Alberni, 1894. A narrative of a journey from Ucluelet to Village Island, 1896, is also on microfilm.

This series contains registers of the Board of Investigation, pursuant to the Water Act (3 vols.) Volume 1 is a register of land, water, mining, power and light, and lumber companies incorporated from 1896-1914. The registers are arranged alphabetically by company name and shows date of incorporation, capital, registered address, and file references. They include miscellaneous file references dated 1918. Volume 2 is a register of water claims in the Alberni district from 1905 to 1908, with Board of Investigation file references. Volume 3 is an alphabetical list of companies with water rights claims that are undated.

Alberni mines

The item is a glass slide showing the flume at the Duke of York Mine, Alberni, made to accompany Laing's 1896 lecture on the beauties and resources of Vancouver Island.

Series consists of letterbooks, 1897-1914 (6 vols.) re ownership and financing of mines, principally on Vancouver Island, including the Golden Eagle and the Valley Creek and re real estate and general business interests, including extensive activities in the Port San Juan area; private account book, 1906-1908. Notes of survey and levels on Golden Eagle, 1900, and notes of survey of underground workings and surface connections, Golden Eagle, 1906.

Photographs

The series consists of loose photographs, a mixture of negatives and prints, taken by Carmichael in the early 1900s. They are of various places including Alberni, Powell River, Haida Gwaii and Peace River and show landscapes, water courses, dams and people as well as mining operations. Several prints may have been removed from an album.

Each image was given an HP (historic photograph) number in the sequence HP001665 to HP001739 and kept as part of the Archives general file (accession 193501-001). Prints, both original and copy, are in the HP original folders while negatives, both original and copy, are filed either by HP number or by negative number, depending on the media (glass, nitrate, acetate etc.).
