Scope and content
The series consists of several types of records the Provincial Council of Women of BC used as mechanisms for reporting and for communications. They have been grouped into one series by the archivist.
The series includes annual reports from local councils, dating from ca. 1940 to 1960. Often written informally, they include reports from the councils at Kamloops, Vancouver, Victoria, Chilliwack, New Westminster, Nanaimo, North Shore, Mission City, Trail and Burnaby. There are also annual reports from groups that were affiliated with the Council of Women, including the Canadian Association of Consumers, the Elizabeth Fry Society, Native Indian Service Council, Victorian Order of Nurses, Association for Retarded Children, Woman’s Missionary Society of the United Church of Canada, and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.
The series also consists of more formal annual reports of the Provincial Council, in printed booklet form, in a complete chronological set dating from 1969 through 2001. These reports give a varying amount and depth of information over time, but include: lists of members and executives, the annual report by the president and by executives, the agenda and minutes of the annual meeting, financial reports, committee reports, reports of “federating societies,” and resolutions of the council.
A smaller group of records in the series consists of annual reports of the Vancouver Council of Women, ca. 1983 to 1999.
The series also consists of a collection of directories produced by the Provincial Council of Women, dating ca. 1968 to 1990. These consist of lists of executives and committee chairmen, including addresses and telephone numbers. These directories also cover local councils around the province, and affiliated organizations or “federating associations,” giving names of officers and current projects being undertaken. In addition to the Provincial Council directories, the series also includes directories of the White Rock and District Council of Women, ca. 1965 to 1990.
The series also consists of a collection of Provincial Council newsletters entitled “Provincial Council of Women of B.C. Bulletin.” This is a very incomplete chronological collection, dating from September 1960 to December 1968.
