Action on the Columbia

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made around 1964. It shows the construction of the Mica, Duncan and Arrow Dams in the Columbia River basin. Some of the communities in the project area are shown and the problems and benefits are discussed. There is footage of Revelstoke and Trail-Kaslo area, flooding of the Columbia near Trail and aerial views of area communities. There is also footage of the 1964 ratification of the Columbia River Treaty at the International Peace Arch, with US President Johnson, Canadian Prime Minister Pearson and BC Premier Bennett.

Alexander Harris interview : [Orchard, 1965]

CALL NUMBER: T0345:0001 RECORDED: New Denver (B.C.), 1965-05-19 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Alexander Harris describes prospecting and mining in the Arrow and Kootenay Lakes area in the 1890s. His father, Joseph Harris, came to Slocan in 1896, established a ranch or farm that supplied vegetables and fruit to the mining camps. Alexander Harris' account includes stories about mining camp life, Orientals, travel on Arrow Lakes, and individual miners: Carpenter, Seighton, Monty; Davis, Martin Fry and Johnny Harris.

TRACK 2: He tells about the naming of mining towns in the area: New Denver, Three Forks, etc. The high school for the area was located on his father's ranch. He describes local culture, social activities, sports, as well as mining techniques, locating ore and equipment.

CALL NUMBER: T0345:0002 RECORDED: New Denver (B.C.), 1965-05-19 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Rock drilling techniques and competitions are discussed. Mr. Harris continues his description of mining methods, ore extraction, transportation to the mills, such as aerial trams, use of horses, processing of ore at the mills, shipping and tailings. A Welsh choir on tour in Canada went bankrupt in the Slocan area and the men worked in the mines at Silverton and New Denver area to earn some money.

TRACK 2: This tape continues with discussions of the New Denver town site, buildings, water transportation, early roads, the Japanese evacuation, Slocan Lake, also known as Lucerne, the Valhalla Range, and New Denver's growth. Wildlife was depleted during the early years of these communities. Mr. Harris speaks about an early trip to the Kokanee Glacier, 1919; Theo Rankin, a local teacher; and his father and mother.

Anna Young interview

Her father, John Peterson, was bought out by Pat Burns, so he went into th;e hotel business with his brother; S.F. Paterson of the Crown Point Hotel. She tells why her family came; the development of the town in the 1890s, including the first water works; the Italian community; life in early Trail; the Arlington Hotel and hotel section; characters; the Crown Point Hotel; a trip to Rossland and the change from narrow to standard gauge. She discusses Rossland's Sourdough; Alley; the early years of the smelter; first schools; riverboats; the effects of smelter smoke; memories of an Easter egg hunt; forest fires; the town site of Deer Park. The item is a negative reel of an industrial film from 1965. It shows the construction at the Arrow dam site, September 1965. There are also aerial views, heavy equipment, dredging and barge dumping fill in lake, etc.

Arthur Gennelle interview

He journeyed from Ontario to Arrowhead in 1905, and discusses the region, the people and the town including the Kaley brothers, Ed Machechern, Harry Johnston, Russell Evans, sports days, log burling and races. He came from England to Winnipeg in 1906, constructed buildings, then joined his two brothers in Edgewood. He discusses social life, fruit farming, wildlife, his family's ranch "Sherwood", and construction of Edgewood's first buildings.

Bert Herridge interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-?] SUMMARY: In an interview with a CBC interviewer [possibly Bert Nelson], Herbert Wilfred (Bert) Herridge recalls life in the Arrow Lakes region in the early 20th century. His family came out from England and settled in the Nakusp area in 1906. Mr. Herridge served in World War One and was wounded at the Battle of the Somme. From 1948 to 1971, he was the CCF (and later NDP) Member of Parliament for Kootenay West. [No detailed content summary available for this interview.]

Blanche Jordan-Williams interview

CALL NUMBER: T0435:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-16 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Blanche Jordan-Williams came to Sicamous, B.C., from Michigan in 1891 to stay with her uncle, Soames Appleby. She married Mr. Frederick W. Jordan, a storeowner, and they moved to Nakusp in 1892. She recalls early Nakusp as a railway construction camp that was busy, rough and noisy. She mentions some townspeople: Jake Sirsun, Mr. Fauquier, Dr. Williamson and Mr. Mara, M.P., a business associate of her husband.

TRACK 2: Continues with early Nakusp, new buildings, development following the departure of the construction camp, the wharf, railway station, hotels, Frank Bourne, the women of the town; Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Madden, Mrs. Muirhead and Mrs. MacDougall. She mentions her husband's business and his knowledge of Chinook. Nakusp's shipping industry, including ship captains, shipyards, sawmills, and mining industries are discussed. She and her husband journey back to Sicamous for the birth of her first child, and the family remained in Nakusp until 1911, when Blanche took charge of the family ranch in Fire Valley near Edgewood. She mentions the Government Survey party and her brother-in-law, George Jordan's first sight of Fire Valley.

Two Jordan brothers worked the family ranch and later they employed Dutch settlers, until Blanche took charge in 1911. She discusses Edgewood, the town site, stores, industry, the hotel she owned and operated, W.J. Banting, and Mrs. Williams.

Boyd Affleck interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-09-08 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Boyd Campbell Affleck came to the Kootenay/Arrow Lakes region in 1907 from Ontario. He took up a surveying job near Nakusp. He discusses settlers and speculators. He describes Fruitva;le in 1907; the development; the early settlers. Then he discusses irrigation and then more on Fruitvale; the impact of WWI on the region; fruit grown; a picnic in the 1930s; settlers; clearing land; and the Fruitvale town site. Mr. Affleck settled near Fruitvale in 1918; lost his hand and was forced back into survey work. He surveyed the town of Salmo. He offers an anecdote about the red light ladies of Erie and then offers more about Fruitvale; the impact of the Trail smelter; and recalls the forest fire of 1939. TRACK 2: Mr. Affleck continues with more on the forest fire. Then he dis;cusses the Trail smelter; effects on fruit farms; Columbia Gardens and survey work at Nelson. He offers more on Fruitvale and Nelson in 1907; transportation; the rivalry between the CPR and GN boats.; He tells a story of how Kaslo tried to steal the Nelson Board of Trade in the 1890s. He discusses the Fruitvale power system in the 1920s; Nelson City Light. He describes the rivalry between West Kootenay Power and Light, and Nelson City Light.

The item consists of a reel of reversal film footage from 1973. It shows conditions on Arrow Lake reservoir (at low water) at Shelter Bay and Galena Bay, caterpillar tractors clearing and piling forest debris on beaches, the Dept. of Highways ferry, tug and boom collecting water-borne debris, Corra Lynn Dam and the beginning of excavation of a canal.

SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Steamboating on BC interior lakes PERIOD COVERED: 1917-1963 RECORDED: Victoria (B.C.), 1979 SUMMARY: Captain Walter H. Spiller recalls his service with the CPR's BC Lake and River Service on the interior lakes from 1917 to 1963. Beginning as a youthful general duty hand he rose to command paddlewheelers and tugs. These tapes provide "a comprehensive and chronological coverage of the development and decline of steamboating on the interior lakes, with details of vessels and the names of personnel involved. [NOTE: Captain Spiller's reminiscences were first prepared for a talk given to members of the Thermopylae Club of Victoria in 1979. The original talk was retaped, with further details added, later in 1979. The revised tapes and the original taped talk were loaned to the Maritime Museum of B.C. for copying.]

Cascade highway : footage

The item consists of a reel of unedited footage. This reel appears to include footage from both the two reels of original reversal film. Shows construction work on the Cascade Section of the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway, between Christina Lake and Rossland. Also includes footage of a couple in a convertible driving to Rossland on a narrow, unpaved and dusty road.

Columbia 64-65 : out-takes

The item consists of 14 reels of colour film out-takes, made around 1964-1965. The footage includes an extensive selection of unused footage documenting aspects of construction at the Arrow, Duncan and Mica dam sites, as well as other operations and events relating to the Columbia River project; plus scenes of the Revelstoke ski tournament and parade, Mica housing development, "test lab North Vancouver," etc. There are outs from "Action on the Columbia", "Columbia '65" and other Parry-produced films on the project.

Columbia River footage

The item is a reel of footage from ca. 1960. It contains miscellaneous scenes along the Columbia River and area during surveys prior to dam construction. Footage includes: seismic crew firing underwater tests in winter, aerial views of the Arrow Lakes and vicinity (proceeding north to Revelstoke) and of the Big Bend of the Columbia, shots of the river, Mica Creek and Duncan Lake dam sites, core-sample drilling, the beached sternwheeler "Minto" and logging of reservoir area.
