The Hornby collection : Emily

SUMMARY: "The Hornby Collection" is an anthology of plays, documentaries, interviews and selected fiction for radio -- all written, prepared and produced in British Columbia. "Emily" is a play by Anne Sniderman about the middle years of the Victoria painter Emily Carr. It depicts Carr taking her first trip across Canada by train to show her paintings at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. Joy Coghill stars in the title role.;

Personal papers and research notes

The papers of Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher, including research files on Emily Carr, Arthur Pitts and the Island Arts and Crafts Society, and personal correspondence and scrapbooks. Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher was a friend and sketching partner of Emily Carr. She wrote two books, M.E.: a portrayal of Emily Carr (1969) and Emily Carr: the untold story (1978). In 1974 she was appointed the "Special Consultant on Emily Carr for the British Columbia government". This collection includes material she gathered during her research, her research correspondence, and drafts of her books and articles. Hembroff-Schleicher also wrote about other subjects, including the British watercolourist Arthur D.J. Pitts who lived in Saanich from 1947 to 1972, and the Island Arts and Crafts Society. Hembroff-Schleicher grew up in Victoria. Her scrapbook and photo albums provide glimpses of life in the city. This collection also includes the journal of her travelling companion, Marian Allardt, during their trip to Europe 1928-29, and her correspondence with fellow artist Max Maynard. The files have been grouped into the following broad thematic categories; duplicates have been removed. Otherwise, the original composition of the files has not been altered: Research - Emily Carr (Boxes 1 to 3); Research - Arthur Pitts (Box 4); Research - Island Arts and Crafts Society (Box 4); Research - Ernest Hemingway (Box 4); Personal - Correspondence and documents (Boxes 4 to 6). The material Hembroff-Schleicher gathered during her research included photocopies of Emily Carr's correspondence. The copies have been retained only if they were annotated, or if they represented collections that are not held by the British Columbia Archives. This collection also included photocopies of all of Emily Carr's correspondence with Ira Dilworth. The photocopies were not retained in this collection because they were not annotated. The originals are in the Parnall (MS-2763) and the Inglis (MS-2181) collections.

Island Arts and Crafts Society : presentation portfolio

The file consists of one hardcover folio, which contains 19 loose artworks created by various artists associated with the Island Arts and Crafts Society (IACS). The portfolio is inscribed with the name "Mrs. N.P. Shaw". The portfolio was presented to Ella Gertrude Shaw, nee Lugrin (Mrs. N.P. Shaw) in March 1925 upon her departure from Victoria to Vancouver. Shaw was a founding member of the IACS and exhibited from 1910-1922 at the Society's annual exhibitions.

Victoria Sketch Club records

Series consists of administrative records of the Victoria Sketch Club. There are record books (1909-1919, 1930-1976), which primarily contain meeting minutes, but also include programs, accounts, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. There are also miscellaneous documents that include membership lists, exhibition catalogues, newspaper clippings, correspondence, schedules, meeting notices, and other items. Many of these documents have the name "Jessie Crease" or "J. Crease" written on them, and may have been collected and maintained by Jessie Crease.

Ethnic communities in Vancouver, [1976-08-23?]

SUMMARY: "Identities" was a CBC radio series that used interviews to examine various ethnic communities and their attitudes towards Canadian life. This episode consists of interviews and sounds about a variety; of subjects, including: an interview with a cabinet minister from BC about his immigrant origins; a Chinese group that hosts a community radio program in Vancouver; an interview about ethnic art with; a Lithuanian artist; and a talk about Sikh's issues with wearing hardhats and other safety gear, which conflict with their religious beliefs. NOTE: The last half-hour of this 1.5-hour program is miss;ing.;

Mist, Henry Masterman

Diaries and scrapbook kept by Henry Masterman Mist while interned in Ruhleben Camp, Spandau during World War I. This unit also contains "Prisoners Pie", a magazine produced by the prisoners for New Year 1916, and 2 books about Ruhleben, "The Ruhleben Prison Camp" by Israel Cohen and "The History of Ruhleben" by Joseph Powell and Frances Cribble.

The series consists of oral history interviews recorded by staff members and research associates of the Provincial Archives of B.C. Major subject areas include: political history (especially the Coalition era, the W.A.C. Bennett years, and David Barrett's NDP government); ethnic groups (including Chinese- and Japanese-Canadans); frontier and pioneer life; the forest industry; B.C. art and artists; the history of photography, filmmaking and radio broadcasting in the province; and the history of Victoria High School.

The interviewers include: Kathryn Bridge, Janet Cauthers, David Day, Patrick Dunae, Terry Eastwood, Merna Forster, Eric Gee, Frances Gundry, Maya Koizumi, W.J. James George French personal papers

Records include diaries, paintings of B.C. fauna and natural history notes from James G. French, who operated an animal menagerie at Victoria. French had his menagerie at Willows Beach, ca. 1897-1900, when he moved it to Swan Lake. He later moved to the property which is now French Beach Provincial Park. Mrs. Jane French operated the Woodbine Rabbitry.
