The Society was founded in 1939 as an unnamed committee, but changed its name to the Society for the Furtherance of B.C. Indian Arts and Crafts before incorporating as the British Columbia Indian Arts and Welfare Society in 1951. The aim of the society was to promote interest in traditional native arts and assist in marketing the art.
