The item is an industrial film made around 1952. It shows details of BC Electric's Bridge River hydro-electric project, begun in 1945. It also includes site preparation and construction of Bridge River and La Joie dams, penstocks, power plants, etc.

Nature's miracle

The item is an educational film made in 1957. It shows the production of hydro-electric power is traced from the melting of snow in the mountains to the waterway that feeds the powerhouse. It also shows construction on the Bridge River project at La Joie Falls and Seton Lake. See also "Behind the Switch", a companion film.

No barriers : [out-takes]

Out-takes. The geographical barriers that once hindered progress in Canada, and the surmounting of those barriers by air travel. Filmed all across Canada (including Charlottetown, Montreal, Toronto and Uranium City), with staged sequences on the Confederation conference, pioneer farming and the building of the CPR through the Rockies. According to Parry, the BC scenes are relatively "anonymous." The outs include aerial views of mountains; aircraft on tarmac and airport terminal scenes (Malton Airport, Toronto); Britannia Mines concentrator; construction & earthmoving at Bridge River and/or Kemano; herring fishing; hydro-electric installations; logging; Ottawa; Quebec City; TCA aircraft; Uranium City, Saskatchewan (airfield, town, Eldorado Mining operations); Vancouver harbour; Yellowknife.

Opening of Bridge River : final stage

The item consists of unedited footage from 1960. It shows the opening ceremonies of the Bridge River Hydro-Electric Project, Second & Final Stage, September 8, 1960. Includes people en route to opening by bus and train, views of transmission towers, turbine rooms, spillways, etc. and officials at site.

Penstock no. 3

The item is an industrial film made around 1949. It describes the construction of penstock no. 3 at the Bridge River project and the water diversion tunnel system through Mission Mountain. See also "Generating unit no. 3".

[Planting, Kamloops district ; Mica pondage clearing]

Stock shots. First section shows crew planting bullet seedlings with planting guns and with dibbles, as well as some bare-root planting. The second section shows the clearing of land in the area to be flooded by the Mica Dam, using caterpillar tractors, Euclids, chain saws, etc. Tree are felled, piled, and the slash and debris are burned. Also includes views of the dam under construction, and of waterways and lakes in the area.

The item is a composite print of a promotional film from ca. 1978. It contains an overview of BC Hydro projects, activities and plans to meet the province's energy needs -- past, present and future. Sequences include: historical footage from 1950s of power plants in the Lower Mainland and the Bridge River development; the Peace River project under construction and now; flood control benefits of the Bennett dam; the provincial power grid; power line right-of-way made available for other uses; new submarine cable to Vancouver Island (late 1960s); Duncan and Keenleyside [Arrow] dams and side benefits [Kokanee spawning channel, Duck Lake waterfowl sanctuary, new beaches on Arrow Lake]; construction at Mica dam site; helicopter transporting transmission tower; crew stringing power lines on Mission Ridge; helicopter patrolling line; crew working on fallen line and tower; possible new energy sources for the future; B.C. Hydro building in Vancouver. "Hydro in Action" is probably a short version of this film.

Progress report

The item is a promotional film made around 1947. It show the BC Electric Railway Company's $50 million post-war expansion and modernization program, to be completed by 1950. Shots includes: expansion of transit services, including start of the switch from streetcars to trolley buses, water gas plant, explanation of the Bridge River project, with footage of construction (including La Joie Falls storage dam) and Lower Mainland power sub-stations. It also include various Vancouver street scenes, especially Fraser Street and downtown.

Footage. A trip the length of Seton Lake aboard the Bridge River ferry. The footage highlights the mountainous scenery en route, and shows cars boarding and driving off the ferry at the terminals.

The item is a release print of a documentary film from ca. 1958. It depicts the life cycle of the sockeye salmon and the work of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission in ensuring the survival of that cycle and of BC's salmon fishing industry. Footage includes: Fort St. James salmon run; seining and gillnetting for sockeye; fishways, fish ladders at Hell's gate, Bridge River and Seton Creek dam; etc.

Wild life : hunting and fishing in British Columbia

The item is a recreational colour film from ca. 1960. It depicts hunting and fishing trips in the Bridge River Country. A group travel by power boat and pack horse to a lakeside cabin. Shows alpine scenery and wildlife, trail riding and camping scenes, building and using a wilderness sauna. Hunting scenes include a hunter who stalks, shoots, and skins a mountain goat, stalking, shooting and packing out deer, moose, etc., pack train with carcasses, cabin with skins and quarter hung up and trophies.

The item is a newsreel compilation on black and white film print. It includes an historical compilation of international news items: Hollywood's first lady 1919-30 [Mary Pickford], 1930 Leap for Life!, 1924 personalities, 1925 Manhattan's ditch, 1927 feet convention, 1917 aviation [WWI observation balloons], 1921 fashions and 1929 sports. It also contains BC material spliced into the print: 1946 "Vancouver celebrates its Diamond Jubilee" (40 sec., with brief discussion of BC Electric's post-war expansion plans); and 1948 Bridge River Hydro first unit opens (1.3 min., with footage of the dam and powerhouse at Bridge River).
