Best of Emerson, no. 6

SUMMARY: "Best of Emerson" is a twice-a-week series (Monday and Friday) that ran from July 2 to September 28, 1962. In this series Vancouver's provocative conversationalist, John Emerson, discusses unusual asp;ects of Vancouver history and gives his recollections and impressions of well-known people. This episode, number 6 in the series, is about Vancouver's bridges.;

Model of proposed airport bridge connecting Vancouver and Civic Airport, Sea Island

Item consists of a mount of one print captioned "Prizing winning scale model of proposed airport bridge connecting Vancouver and Civic Airport, Sea Island. An original concept by Jack Lubzinski Richmond High School - 1941". A rendered drawing shows a bridge across a waterway with an airplane in the sky; ribbons from the Canada Pacific Exhibition Hobby Show on Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, 1941 in Vancouver, B.C. for first prize and grand award of show; and two sides of a medal captioned "Gold Medal." "Leonard Frank, A.R.P.S." is written at the bottom right of the rendering. "Negative No. 24804 Leonard Frank Photos 533 Granville St. Phone Marine 9945 Vancouver, B.C." is stamped on the verso.

Oak Street bridge : footage

The file consists of three reels of unedited film footage, either Kodachrome originals or a workprint. The footage documents the need for, and construction of, the Oak Street Bridge between Vancouver and Richmond. Includes sequences showing traffic problems at and around the old Lulu Island bridges (Fraser Street Bridge and Marpole Bridge); traffic to Vancouver International Airport (plus "air traffic"); Richmond Lumber Yard and rush hour traffic; horse racing at Lansdowne Park; the Peace Arch; Fraser River bridges and tugboats; opening ceremonies for the new bridge (with Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi); views from a tugboat towing a log boom on the Fraser River; construction, painting and finishing on the Oak Street Bridge.

Item consists of one panoramic photograph of the False Creek area of Vancouver. Visible industrial businesses include West Coast Shipbuilders, Hamilton Bridge Western Ltd., Columbia Machine Works, and Dominion Construction Co. Ltd. A variety of automobiles, railroad tracks, industrial materials and machinery, and people are visible. "#822-P. Aug. 20/43. W.J. Moore" has been captioned at the bottom right corner.
