The British Columbia Cattle Company was incorporated to develop and manage the Triangle Ranch located in Quilchena and the Canoe Creek Ranch.
Custodial history
Provenance: The fonds was donated to the City of Victoria Archives in September 1976 by the British Columbia Land and Investment Agency as part of accession 97609-01. The fonds was held by the City of Victoria Archives as PR 3 until March, 2000, when it was transferred to the British Columbia Archives. The accession also included the following related material which was also transferred to the British Columbia Archives: MS-2880, British Columbia Land and Investment Agency fonds (1858-1963); MS-2881, Western Canadian Ranching Company fonds (1884-1952); MS-2883, London and Canadian Fire Insurance Company fonds (1890-1900); MS-2884, Nestegg and Firefly Gold Mining Company fonds (1896-1900); MS-2885, Canadian Pacific Land and Mortgage Company fonds (1888-1896); MS-2886, Mara Estate Limited fonds (1920-1955); and MS-2887, British Columbia Market Company fonds (1894-1910).
Scope and content
The British Columbia Cattle Company was incorporated by John Irving, Thomas Ellis and Richard Lowe Cawston on Nov. 5, 1890, to carry on farming, stock-raising and butchering and to acquire land for those purposes. The company managed the Triangle Ranch at Quilchena and the Canoe Creek Ranch. The firm was deleted from the companies register in 1944. Fonds consists of one series of correspondence inward dealing with miscellaneous matters relating to the management of the two ranches and the sale of beef cattle.
