History

The Port Alberni Forest District was established in 1981 under the Ministry of Forests Act, 1978. It was part of the Vancouver Forest Region, and had previously existed as a more informal "Ranger District" with the same boundaries. Its name was changed in 1998 to the South Island Forest District.
