Biographical history
The Ministry of Highways and Public Works was established in 1976 as the successor to the Dept. of Highways and Public Works (OIC 3199/76). The ministry was responsible for all matters relating to the acquisition, construction, repair, maintenance, alteration, improvement and operation of government buildings, highways and public works. The ministry organized itself into a section for highways and another for public works. Each section was managed by an assistant deputy minister.
In 1978, the Ministry of Highways and Public Works was renamed the Ministry of Transportation, Communication and Highways (OIC 3018/78) when it acquired the transportation, commercial transport, and communications functions from the Ministry of Energy, Transport and Communications (1976-1978).
Custodial history
Scope and content
The series consists of the Dept. of Public Works central registry files including the building and subject file register and index.
The files are arranged by file code and are stored in over 300 containers (000329-0001 to 000329-0369). In order to access the files, first consult the registers and indexes in GR-1248 boxes A, B and C.
Box A consists of offsite container lists created by Archives staff. These lists provide the offsite container numbers for the original Public Works box and file numbers. Box B contains the original buildings file register, listed numerically with an alphabetical index by geographical area and Box C contains the original subject file register.
