Biographical history
Alexander Campbell Murray was a Hudson's Bay Company employee. A.C. Murray was born on April 25, 1858, at the Hudson's Bay Company Post at Georgetown (Minnesota), on the Pembina. His father was Chief Trader Alexander Hunter Murray, who built Fort Yukon. In 1876, Murray traveled from Winnipeg to Fort St. James to serve as an apprentice under Chief Trader James M.L. Alexander at Fort Fraser. In spring of 1877, he was in charge of Stoney Creek, near Vanderhoof, where he spent two years. Following Stoney Creek, Murray spent seven years at Fort Fraser, three years at Fort Grahame, and one year at Fort McLeod. He later became district accountant under at Fort St. James under Chief Trader William Trail and in 1891 was in charge of Fort St. James, with supervision of other posts in the district (likely including Babine Portage and Stuart Lake Portage). In 1897 he was sent to Fort Simpson and in 1900 to Hazelton. He married Mary Bird in 1883.
