[Vancouver Island and Mainland] : [footage]

Footage. This lengthy compilation comprises the earliest Booth films (mostly unedited 100-foot reels), placed in chronological order. They focus on travel and recreation in two major areas: Vancouver Island and the lower Fraser Canyon. The first reel (1931) shows an auto court and various scenes around the Fraser Canyon, including native Indians drying fish. This is followed by a series of reels (all from 1932) showing tourist spots and recreation on Vancouver Island, including Butchart Gardens, Goldstream Park, Saanich Inlet, a lake (possibly Shawnigan Lake), skating (at Lost Lagoon, Vancouver), fishing and water sports at Vancouver Island spots, the Chemainus River, Nanaimo, the CPR ferry "Princess Elaine", a pan of Comox Valley, many coastal features, and a sequence on hikers in high mountain terrain. Another reel shows details of native fishing in the Fraser Canyon. A brief sequence (ca. 1933), shows a car on a snowy road being towed by two horses. The last reel (1934) shows fishing at Campbell River.

Fishing for tyee

The item is a recreational film. "'Members of the Campbell River Fishing Club in British Columbia stage their annual outing during the tyee salmon season. Many fine catches of large specimens are shown.' [also described as:] 'Tyee Club of British Columbia holds its annual competition at Campbell River, V.I.' There are no particular landmarks in this film. The first scenes show small boats out trolling on the ocean. [Close-up of] fisherman polishing up a spoon. A 45-pound tyee is hooked and brought aboard a small clinker-built boat. A lady out fishing with a gent, after a long struggle, pulls in a 35-40 pounder. Another tyee is landed aboard a small clinker boat. Caption: 'Club rules do not permit the use of power boats or heavy fishing tackle.' Two men and a woman in a clinker boat pull in a tyee weighing about 35 pounds. They walk up the beach smiling and carrying their catch. The fish is measured by club officials. A display of five huge tyee with Tyee Club members gathered around. The fish are weighed. The Silver Button, an indicator of fish caught in the 40-50 pound bracket, is awarded to the lady who caught the fish. Sunset and some boats are still out on the sea fishing for a bigger one."
