Administrative history
The Victoria City and District Branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society was organized on 2 March 1900 as an affiliate of the British Red Cross Society. The Victoria Branch received its charter from the Canadian Red Cross Society on 5 May 1915 and subsequently became a part of the society's British Columbia-Yukon Division. The branch was originally established to raise money for medical supplies and personal comforts for the Canadian military contingent in South Africa. The branch carried out similar work during the two World Wars by providing medical equipment and social services to Canadian troops at home and abroad. During peacetime, the Red Cross Society has been principally concerned with blood donor clinics and water safety programs. The local branch of the society also maintains a veterans' lodge and provides emergency services planning, a sickroom equipment loan service, and home nursing classes.
