History

CBUT is Western Canada’s oldest television station, having signed on the air in December 1953. The station’s headquarters was originally in downtown Vancouver and later moved to the CBC building at 700 Hamilton Street, although a TV transmitter had been installed on Burnaby Mountain. The original plans for a tower on Vancouver’s North Shore were abandoned due to the complaints of local residents, however, in 1955, a 265-foot tower was erected on Mount Seymour. Decades later, in 1981, transmitters would also be installed in Sooke and Mount McDonald.

In 1962, CBUT opened its first re-broadcaster in Courtenay, with the channel being known as CBUT-1. CBUT-2 opened in Chilliwack in 1966, and that same year, CBUT began broadcasting in colour. By 1975, CBUT had expanded to include CBUT-3, CBUT-4, and CBUT-5 in Fruitvale, Erie, and Salmo respectively and by 2009, CBUT operated 46 transmitters across the province. By 2015, CBC Vancouver’s managing director was Johnny Michel.
