An envelope containing six New Zealand 1d stamps over printed "Victoria Land" were removed from this accession and stored in the archives vault until 2024 when they were described and housed in container 002340-2804. - Stu Hill 2024-03-13

Scope and content

The records consist of letters and a postcard, 1910-1913, relating to the British Antarctic Expedition; letters written to his future wife from the trenches, in 1914; a letter and certificates re his service with the British mission in Japan, 1921-1922; a bound and illustrated manuscript entitled "The Land of the Budorchus" and printed articles re his travels in Western China, ca. 1908-1909. The records also contain documents relating to his wife, Annie Christina Meares.

Immediate source of acquisition

Bequeathed to the B.C. Provincial Museum by Mrs. C.H. Meares; transferred to the Provincial Archives in 1976. Artifacts retained by the Museum.

Arrangement

Photographs were removed from the records and transferred to the Visual Records Dept. and reaccessioned as 197901-110.
His sword, medals, books, a sled flag, and papers went to the BC Provincial Museum.
Books transferred to the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge.
