Christine and Harold Stuart interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-07-27 SUMMARY: Mr. Harold Stuart remembers the Redstone area from 1920 to 1950, his father Andrew Stuart, Indians, the fur trade, grocery shipments from Williams Lake to Redstone, Benny Franklin, A.P. Lee, E. Penrose, who established the Redstone reserve, and murders. Then, Miss Christine Stuart continues about murders, a history of an early doctor, a description of E.P. Lee, and Indian and white relations. Then Mr. Stuart remembers and Indian old timer, Grande Bouche, and an Indian legend.

Christine Sollid interview

RECORDED: Hagensborg (B.C.), 1981-09 SUMMARY: At the time of this interview, Christine was living in the house in which she was born and had also raised her own family. She worked at the store her father built in Hagensborg, near Bella Coola. Bella Coola was very isolated, only served by boat, until the settlers built a road to Anahim Lake, and thence to Williams Lake.

Correspondence

The series consists of photocopies of three letters and a written "sketch" sent to friends and a brother in England. Hargreaves arrived in Victoria from England on July 2, 1862. The letter of Sept. 1, 1862 describes his first attempt to reach the Cariboo, from which he turned back, his work as a survey assistant in the Cowichan district, and his reaction to the articles written by Donald Fraser, the London TIMES correspondent. The second letter, Jan. 9, 1865, describes a trip to Cariboo in 1863 and the third item is a "sketch of a trip I made in the winter of 1875" describing a CPR exploratory survey in the Chilcotin. The final item, a letter of Feb 6, 1878, continues the account of his survey work in 1875, describing work in the Salmon (Kimsquit) River Valley at the head of Dean Channel, and in the Kemano River.

Correspondence and other material

The series contains letters concerning the publication of short stories and "Three Against the Wilderness"; a letter to the Game Commissioner re the antlerless deer season; a letter from his brother in England re family matters; various financial records; notebooks; typescript and galley proofs of "Three Against the Wilderness"; manuscripts of short stories and clippings.

RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-] SUMMARY: Mr. Dan Lee, of Hanceville in the Chilcotin, tells the story of his father Norman Lee and his journey from England in 1887, early work, going into the fur trading business with Hugh Bayliff, roads in the area, the fur business, the Lee Ranch, mail delivery, comments on the local Indians, Mrs. Hance and other early white women of the area, the Bechers and their stopping house at Riske Creek.

Dennis Walker interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-08-06 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Dennis Walker recalls the journey from England to Vancouver with his parents in 1892, and their eventual move to the head of Bute Inlet; his father's name was William George Walker. He ;then describes building a homestead; the slow influx of other settlers; the growth of the community around Mr. Walker's original home site; social events in the community of Bute Inlet; various attempts by his father to sell farm produce in Vancouver; the problems which arise from being so far from the market; and stories of other families in the town. TRACK 2: Mr. Walker continues by describing; a trip with other youths up the Southgate River to the Chilcotin; a description of the salmon spawning season; comments on wildlife in the area; the death and burial of three Walker children; the destruction of the township by fire; an anecdote about original settler Tony Bernhardt; the death of Shorty Hibbs at the hands of the Indians; comments on coast and interior Indians; the unused Mallard Company Tannery; the climate and physical setting of the township; his father's departure for work in Vancouver; the gradual departure of the other settlers when the railroad failed to materialize; and; his travels through BC, especially Barkerville, as a machinist.

Diaries

Diaries of H.E. Church, 1890-1933; account book and personal papers of R.H. Church, 1927-1969; business papers re the Church ranch; papers of the Big Creek Stock Breeders Association, 1923-1969. H.E. Church emigrated from England to Canada in 1886. He homesteaded on Sheep Creek in Southern Alberta from 1887 to 1897, farmed at Comox, B.C. from 1897 to 1902, and in 1903 moved to Big Creek, B.C.

Diary

The series consists of a diary kept by Hargreaves while a member of "W.X.Y." division during a C.P.R. survey of Bute Inlet, 1872. Also includes a typescript diary and survey notes, May to October 1874, kept while surveying between Burrard Inlet and Pender Harbour.

Diary

Diary of a survey carried out for the Water Rights Branch, August and September, 1929, between Chilco Lake and Bishop River and between Franklyn Arm of Chilco Lake and the forks of the Southgate and Bishop Rivers, with a view to determining the possibility of diverting Chilco Lake either by a tunnel through Mt. Chilco or by a Tunnel from Franklyn Arm to Southgate River. Also contains survey notes and pencil sketches. Map transferred to Map Collection, accession 18445.

Emil and Gertrude Krebs interview

CALL NUMBER: T0373:0001 RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-07-24 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Emil Richard Krebs and his wife Gertrude Krebs recall their experiences in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region. Mr. Krebs discusses his father, Fred Krebs, who settled in Vernon. Mr. Krebs describes Okanagan ranches and Vernon circa 1908. He discloses his first experiences in the Chilcotin in 1928, Chilcotin ranches, several anecdotes, how he took up land at Dog Creek, the settlement of the Dog Creek area, the Chinese population, wild horses, and the trap line at Canim Lake in 1939. TRACK 2: Mr. Krebs offers an anecdote about trappers, pioneers at Canim Lake, the story of Buckskin Joe, the Indian population, the town of Likely, Quesnel Forks, and anecdotes about mining in the Keithley Creek-Likely area.

Eric Collier interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-07-07 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Eric Collier describes the Chilcotin region from 1922 to 1945. He describes the Big Bar Lake country from 1920 to 1922 and his early experiences: fishing, mosquitoes, fencing, his cousin Harry Marriott, and the Big Bar Lake Dude Ranch. He also describes the early settlers such as Frederick M. Becher, the attitude of Chilcotin pioneers, roads in the Chilcotin, the Becher House at Riske Creek, a description of F.M. Becher and more on the Becher House, and more on the pioneer R.C. Cotton. TRACK 2: The discussion of R.C.
