History

Glen David Clark was born in Nanaimo BC on November 22, 1957. He studied politics at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. After university he worked as a union organizer in the Lower Mainland before seeking elected office. Clark was elected to the British Columbia Legislature on his first attempt in 1986. He represented the constituency of Vancouver East as a member of the New Democratic Party. Clark went on to win the next two elections in 1991 and 1996 representing the constituency of Vancouver-Kingsway. Following the NDP victory in 1991 Premier Mike Harcourt appointed Clark Minister of Finance and Corporate Relations. Clark was also appointed government house leader. Harcourt moved Clark to the Ministry of Employment and Investment in 1993. After a political scandal removed Harcourt from leadership in 1996 Clark won leadership of the party on the first ballot at a party convention. Clark was then sworn in days later as Premier on February 22, 1996. Following his appointment as Premier Clark ran a successful campaign to win the first consecutive NDP victory in British Columbia when his party was re-elected on May 28, 1996. Clark served as Premier of BC from February 1996 to August 1999. Clark's premiership ended in resignation on August 21, 1999 after allegations of bribery. Glen Clark was succeeded by Dan Miller as interim Premier and leader of the NDP. Clark moved into private business and in 2005 he later became the President of the Jim Pattison Group.
