Toketie makes another cruise summer 1940

Amateur film. Coastal people, places and scenery between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Includes footage of Indian villages, pictographs, birds and wildlife, logging operations, other vessels, etc. One sequence shows a Kelly raft of aviation spruce being broken up; another shows logs being unloaded from the log barge "Monongahela" (formerly the ship "Balasore", whose figurehead is shown sitting on shore). The B.C. Packers cannery at Quathiaski Cove is shown. Troops arrive at Nanaimo from Vancouver on the "Princess Victoria" and parade through the streets.

Tourism : a British Columbia industry

Promotional film. Activities of the BC Government Travel Bureau in promoting the B.C. tourist industry, emphasizing the diverse methods used to advertise the province. Includes footage of various B.C. industries, the Minister and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, the Bureau commissioner and office staff, advertising campaigns, design and printing of colour travel brochures, public correspondence, personal contacts, promoting autombile travel, and brief shots of a car ferry, a coastal steamer, a steam train, and an airliner. Other scenes show the B.C. exhibits at the Golden Gate International Exposition and the Los Angeles Outing Show. Of special interest is a section on filmmaking, which shows Clarence Ferris running a movie camera and splicing film, and a scene of Leon Shelly's film crew shooting the BCGTB-sponsored travelogue BEAUTIFUL BRITISH COLUMBIA.

The item is a video copy of a travelogue. Depicts some highlights to be seen during a steamship cruise along the west coast of Vancouver Island, from Barkley Sound to Quatsino Sound. Footage includes: a tourist information office; mountain and shoreline scenery; First Nations man carving a dugout canoe from a cedar log at "Ahooset" [i.e, Ahousat]; Friendly Cove lighthouse; Tulpana [i.e., Tlupana?] Canyon; exploring the shores of Nootka Island [?] by small boat; the "quaint Indian village" of Friendly Cove; totem pole honouring Captain Cook; Women making and selling baskets at Quatsino; Port Alice; a nearby whaling station [probably Coal Harbour]; seal colony on Salander Rock [i.e., Solander Island]; injured eagle, and hunters posing with dead eagles.

"Vancouver Around 1890" includes discussion of the following: the eviction of the Squamish people from the Lumbermen's Arch section of Stanley Park, recalled by Chief August Jack Khahtsahlano; the ceremonial opening of Stanley Park and descriptions of native burial sites, recalled by Sam Walker; the grounding of the HBC ship "Beaver", described by Captain Jack Canessa; Sam Walker on the building boom of 1887; and Reuben Hamilton on the "old" Westminster Highway in Vancouver's wilderness setting, and the Woodward's Block.

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1976-08-04 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Captain William Higgs recalls how his father, Leonard Higgs, came out from England to British Columbia via Oregon, and settled on South Pender Island. William was born in 1901. Educated at home, then three terms boarding at St. Michael's school. Made boats out of cedar slabs, then out of cedar lumber. Boat trips to pick up supplies at Cadboro Bay, Mayne Island or Sidney. Learned boatbuilding skills from father. William became an apprentice seaman on the CPR steamships, starting with the "Princess Beatrice", rising to quartermaster. Coastal stops visited. After 2.5 years, went into tugboats and towboating. Started his own small towing business in Sidney, Gulf Islands Transportation Company. In 1934, company moved to Nanaimo and changed name to Nanaimo Towing Company. William and his brother Tom designed a ferry, bid on the Nanaimo to Gabriola run, had the ferry "Atriveda" built, and ran the service 1931-1946. Also developed and ran three small ferries to carry passengers from Nanaimo to the CPR resort on Newcastle Island. Sold out of ferry business 1946 and expanded marine salvage and towing work. Sold out to Straits Towing Company 1951. After that, worked as Associate Surveyor to the Board of Marine Underwriters of San Francisco. Retired to Gibsons, then developed the Higgs Lifesaving Search Initiator Buoy system. Towboating work. TRACK 2: More on towboating and marine salvage jobs. Salvaging the S.S. "Catala" from a reef at Lasqueti Island. His first rescue and salvage experiences: rescuing canoeists off Gowland Point when he was "a little lad"; salvaging the CPR rail car barge "No. 6" at the age of 12, after chartering Gerald Payne's tug "Nora" for the job.
