Biographical history

The Commission of Inquiry into Educational Finance was established under Section 5 of the Public Inquiries Act by order in council 1833, dated November 27, 1944. Maxwell A. Cameron, Professor of Education at the University of British Columbia, was appointed sole commissioner to inquire into the existing distribution of powers and responsibilities between the provincial government and the school districts and to appraise the present fiscal position of the school districts in British Columbia. Twenty-seven public hearings were held at various centres in the Province, and seventy-five briefs were received and examined. The commission report was published in 1945 and tabled in the Legislature on February 25, 1946.

Custodial history

The records were transferred from the Legislative Library of British Columbia to the British Columbia Archives in 1979. Provincial Secretary file 145-20 may have been added to the commission records after the commission ended.

Scope and content

The series consists of Provincial Secretary file 145-20 (1944-1946) which contains correspondence, vouchers and copy of the order in council appointing Maxwell A. Cameron as the commissioner; 75 briefs (1945) presented to the commission; the commissioner's signed report (1945) and a copy of the published report (1945).
