Biographical history

Appointed by Order-in-Council no. 848, April 19, 1951. Commissioner: H.S. Wood. Report May, 1951. An inquiry was ordered to determine the truth of newspaper stories regarding Mrs. Donald Ritchie's loss of her unborn child by being unable to gain admission to hospital. The Commissioner ruled that, although it would have been desirable to place Mrs. Ritchie in hospital for her health's sake, her admission would not have saved the child.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The commissioner, Supreme Court Justice Mr. Herbert Spencer Wood, was appointed to investigate allegations in the press, and elsewhere, that Mrs. Donald Ritchie of Vancouver lost her unborn child because of her inability to gain admission to hospital. Commission records include Provincial Secretary files P-5 which contain correspondence, vouchers, copy of Letters Patent appointing the commissioner, transcript of evidence presented at proceedings (original and copy) and exhibits (list of exhibits in proceedings, pp. ii-iii). Also included is the commissioner's six page typewritten unpublished report which concluded that Mrs. Ritchie was not an emergency case and the loss of her baby was not caused by the failure to admit her to hospital, although this was an appropriate case for hospitalization.
