Biographical history

Appointed May 19, 1917; report [1917]. Commissioners: David Whiteside, F. A. Pauline, and C. F. Nelson, Members of the Legislative Assembly. The commissioners were appointed by the provisions of the Prohibition Overseas Vote Investigation Act " (1917, chapter 50), to inquire into charges that frauds and irregularities had occurred in taking the votes of the soldiers overseas on the referendum regarding prohibition. The commissioners proceeded overseas to take evidence in the course of their investigation.

Scope and content

The commissioner, Judge of the County Court of Atlin, Frederick McBain Young, was appointed by statute (BCS 1917, c. 20), on 19 May 1917 to investigate the conduct of the election and all persons concerned with it. This was in response to allegations that offences had been committed under the Provincial Elections Act and amending Acts regarding the election of the member for the Fort George electoral district. Commission records consist of transcripts of evidence presented at proceedings, exhibits and the signed report.
