Biographical history

Appointed by Order-in-Council no. 35, January 7, 1955. Commissioner: Gordon McGregor Sloan. Reported, 1956. Chief Justice Sloan, Commissioner of the 1945 Forest Inquiry, was again appointed to review the forest resources of the Province. He found government inconsistencies in granting timber licences and recommended better control over licencing. New licences should be issued for twenty-one years instead of in perpetuity and an immediate moratorium on the issuing of licences should be declared. A permanent forest advisory council should be established and another forestry review should be conducted in ten years.

Custodial history

Scope and content

Appointed under the Public Inquiries Act (O.I.C. no. 35, 1955), Commissioner Gordon McG. Sloan. Report tabled in the Legislative Assembly, 23 January 1955. Transcripts of evidence, exhibits, report synopsis. Includes indexes. Some exhibits are missing and their location unknown. Maps have been transferred to the map collection [Map Accession M856141]. A list is appended to the Finding Aid. Photographs have been transferred to the photograph collection (Accession 198502-025). To locate items in this unit quickly, three separate research aids should be used: 1.The bound Commission Index found in Box 1. 2.The index in BC Archives Volume 61, "Analysis." 3.This finding aid. It should be noted that some exhibits are missing from this unit. They were never received by BCARS; consequently, their fate is unknown. Gaps in the sequence of exhibits numbers listed in this finding aid pinpoint missing items. For conservation reasons, map and photograph exhibits have been removed from the files and are now available as map and photograph accessions. A transfer slip noting this removal replaces the item in the relevant file. Files with removed material are noted with an *. A list of the removed exhibits with accession numbers also appears at the end of the finding aid. LIST OF EXHIBITS TRANSFERRED TO OTHER DIVISIONS The box and file numbers given before indicate where the items were originally housed. The media designation indicates the media of each item, which is now stored and accessed with other records of like media. Where available, the media accession number is also provided.
