[Highway building at Salmon Arm]

Amateur film. "A rock-crushing site; asphalt is loaded into a truck. At road-building site the truck dumps the asphalt. The road is graded and rolled. MIXERS: The camera records the operation of two giant machines, fed by trucks. The trucks dump gravel from crusher into huge scoops which raise the rock, dumping it into the mixer which digests it until processed, at which time the asphalt is moved in buckets to a hopper under which sits a truck ready to receive the material. The truck, once filled, drives away and is replaced by another. There are several complete shots of this operation. Scene of work yard in wild country where crushers and other machines are operating and filling trucks. Truck dumping fill with grader waiting. Grader grading. Shovel working. Blasting a sandy bluff. Huge machine moving dirt overhead, seems to be scraping it off the road then dumping it behind. Heavy dirt movers assemble on the road and drive by. Many shots of carryalls, from many angles. James Sutcliffe Day interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-11-11 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Jim S. Day describes how he came from Lancashire after the South African War and landed in Halifax in January 1904; his train ride out west, and jobs he worked as he made his way westward; his arrival in Vancouver; a contract he accepted in Salmon Arm in 1906; anecdotes about his life there, including details about Jim Edmunds and about a school concert; his time opening a contracting; business, and all of the buildings he built in the first decade of the 1900s; what Salmon Arm was like when he arrived; building a road; the Columbia River Lumber Company; shipping fruit; building churches in the area and the support of the population of these churches; Scottie Mitchell, who was an architect, and a story of him on a survey crew. TRACK 2; Mr. Day continues by telling a story about the building of a wharf and building of a dam; wedding celebrations; and being elected to council in 1929.

Jet fired power : the story of BC's first gas turbine generating station

The item is a release print of an industrial film from 1956-1957. It shows the construction of the Georgia Gas Turbine Generating Station on Bare Point at Chemainus. Footage includes press conference with BC Power Commission general manager Lee Briggs, construction of power plant, cantilever tanker dock and fuel tank farm by Sandwell and Company Ltd., design of turbines in New York and transport operation, arrival of tanker "Oregon Standard" with first load of fuel. There is also a sequence on Vancouver Island communities and industries regarding their demand for electricity.

[Kemano, 1954]

The item consists of approximately 30 minutes of colour, silent unedited footage. The film depicts helicopter usage during the construction work at Kemano as well as other miscellaneous footage. The helicopters shown are a Bell 47, a Sikorsky S-55 and an RCAF Vertol H21A.

The item is a colour industrial film from 1950. It shows construction work on the La Joie Dam during 1950 including blasting, excavation, dam fill operation, spillways, floodgates and control valves. La Joie dam was part of the Bridge River development.

The item is an industrial film. It shows the construction of BC Electric's new Lake Buntzen power plant on Indian Arm around 1951. Footage includes demolition (by explosion) of part of the original plant, construction of cofferdam, penstock and tunnel; installation of turbines and generators, official opening with guests arriving on the launch "Hollyburn."

The film includes footage of snow survey work on central Vancouver Island, a logging crew clearing trees at the edge of a reservoir, work in progress on the water diversion tunnel at Ash River, transmission tower construction, a crew hanging warning markers on power lines, inspection of power lines via helicopter and Spillimacheen generating station. There are also scenes in Fort St. James and vicinity. The film is set within the framework of a simulated interview show on CHEK-TV. Director of administration Garth Griffith and public information officer Jim Bogyo talk with host Keith Cutler.
