Bridge River

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made between ca. 1945 and 1948. It shows the first phase of the Bridge River Project including construction of the Bridge River diversion dam, Seton Lake powerhouse, penstock on Mission Mountain, and power transmission lines to Vancouver; site preparation for La Joie storage dam and opening of first phase on 23 October 1948. There is also footage of Vancouver and vicinity emphasizing demand for electrical power.

[Dam construction ; Royal visit, 1939]

Amateur film. The first 70 feet shows elements of the construction of Campbell River Dam [also known as Hart Dam or Elk Falls Dam], which was built ca. 1946-1948. The balance of the reel shows Vancouver scenes from the 1939 Royal Visit. "King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in an open car. King and Queen behind a flag-bedecked wooden wall in Empire Stadium, masses of people on the field in sports gear. Crowds along the street as King and Queen pass in open car. [Close-up] Royal car. Two following cars, crowds along the route. Interior of stadium; a huge parade of boys and girls marches onto the field. White-clad athletes perform choreographed exercises. Dorothy's dream house

The item is a promotional film on colour print, made in the mid 1950s. It shows the planning, design, construction and features of a BCE "Ease-of-Living" modern home, equipped with up-to-date electrical appliances. Footage of special interest includes a view from a car crossing Lion's Gate Bridge and views of the British Properties.

Natural gas is on the way

The item is release print of an industrial film made by Canadian Bechtel Ltd. between 1955 and 1957. It shows the
construction of Westcoast Transmission's natural gas pipeline from the Peace River gas fields to Huntington in the Lower Mainland. It includes views of the Peace River region, Fraser Valley, Fraser River and Thompson River, construction of pipeline river crossing in Coquihalla Canyon, land clearing, shipload of pipe arriving at Vancouver Harbour, views from PGE train carrying pipe north and procedure of welding and ditching pipe.

Oak Street bridge : footage

The file consists of three reels of unedited film footage, either Kodachrome originals or a workprint. The footage documents the need for, and construction of, the Oak Street Bridge between Vancouver and Richmond. Includes sequences showing traffic problems at and around the old Lulu Island bridges (Fraser Street Bridge and Marpole Bridge); traffic to Vancouver International Airport (plus "air traffic"); Richmond Lumber Yard and rush hour traffic; horse racing at Lansdowne Park; the Peace Arch; Fraser River bridges and tugboats; opening ceremonies for the new bridge (with Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi); views from a tugboat towing a log boom on the Fraser River; construction, painting and finishing on the Oak Street Bridge.

The item is a composite print of an industrial film, from 1961. It shows the construction of Western Pacific's crude oil pipeline from the Peace River region to Kamloops. Includes shots of Barkerville; seismic blasting; drilling for oil; laying of pipeline (with crossings of the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers); BC oil refineries (including Ioco); Prince George; Vancouver (harbour, Lion's Gate Bridge, skyline); Cariboo range land and family recreation.

Panorama of False Creek industry, 1943

Item consists of one panoramic photograph of the False Creek area of Vancouver. Visible industrial businesses include West Coast Shipbuilders, Hamilton Bridge Western Ltd., Columbia Machine Works, and Dominion Construction Co. Ltd. A variety of automobiles, railroad tracks, industrial materials and machinery, and people are visible. "#822-P. Aug. 20/43. W.J. Moore" has been captioned at the bottom right corner.

The breadwinners

Industrial film. The variety of jobs performed by BC workers, and the role of the WCB in promoting safety and protecting and assisting injured workers. Includes much footage of job sites and people at work (especially miners, loggers and construction workers). Other footage includes a dramatization of an injured man being rushed to hospital by floatplane and ambulance; the International First Aid Championships, with simulated accident victims and competing industrial first aid teams; opening of the new WCB administration complex in Vancouver; scenes in the offices of the WCB; injured workers taking part in physiotherapy and other activities at the WCB's rehabilitation centre in Vancouver; sod-turning for the Leslie R. Petersen Rehabilitation Centre in Richmond. Film begins with long morning sequence of workers going to work, and includes historical background on the role of these "breadwinners" in BC's development.

The mountain movers

The item consists of an industrial film showing the construction of the hydro-electric development to supply power to the Kitimat smelter: the Kenney Dam on the Nechako River, the Kemano tunnel through Mt. DuBose, the stringing of power transmission lines, and a helicopter airlift of supplies. Also includes shots of community facilities at Kitimat or Kemano, and of Vancouver (skyline and miscellaneous views).
