[Pacific Great Eastern Railway inaugural run, August 1956]

Special event coverage. Chronicles the August 28-30, 1956, inauguration of through-service on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway between North Vancouver and Prince George. Premier W.A.C. Bennett and other dignitaries ride the three inaugural trains, which are eagerly greeted by the residents of towns along the route. A rockslide at Mile 18 on Howe Sound delays the journey until a bulldozer clears the tracks. At Williams Lake station, a mock frontier lynching is staged for the entertainment of the premier and his party. Following footage of the arrival in Prince George, the film also shows progress on northward expansion of the PGE line (including bridge and grade construction), and ends with shots of oil rigs in the Peace River Region.

Waves of magic

Documentary. The installation of the BC portion of a trans-Canada microwave relay system for telephone and television transmission. Shows surveying and testing of relay sites and construction of relay stations, especially the station on Dog Mountain (near Hope), where an aerial tramway was used to transport men and equipment.

Rogers Pass

The item is a promotional film that depicts the history of Rogers Pass and the construction of the section of the Trans-Canada Highway that runs through it. Includes a re-enactment of the pass's discovery in 1881 by Major A.B. Rogers.

The Coquihalla Highway : 20 months through the mountains

The item is a video copy of an industrial film showing a historical account of the construction of the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt. The film highlights general grade and bridge construction, as well as the erection of the reinforced retaining walls and the Dry Gulch Bridge. Also explored are the planning procedures, the management process, offsite component manufacture, and the environmental mitigation measures.

Item consists of one panoramic photograph of the False Creek area of Vancouver. Visible industrial businesses include West Coast Shipbuilders, Hamilton Bridge Western Ltd., Columbia Machine Works, and Dominion Construction Co. Ltd. Bridge River

The item is a composite print of an industrial film made between ca. 1945 and 1948. It shows the first phase of the Bridge River Project including construction of the Bridge River diversion dam, Seton Lake powerhouse, penstock on Mission Mountain, and power transmission lines to Vancouver; site preparation for La Joie storage dam and opening of first phase on 23 October 1948. There is also footage of Vancouver and vicinity emphasizing demand for electrical power.

Bridge River stage two (dam) : part 1 : Soletanche

The item is an industrial film on a black and white workprint made between 1956 and 1960. It contains footage of the construction of the Mission Dam on the Bridge River project Soletanche and shows special operations (1958-59) required to seal the foundations and substrata under the site to prevent seepage. Depicts work to remove sections of old steel pilings (cut loose by divers with torches working in mud-filled pits); driving a wall of sheet pilings; manufacturing a clay/cement grout mixture and forcing it into the substrata under pressure to form an impervious curtain. This film is likely very similar to the French-language film produced for the French engineering firm (Soletanche Ltd.) which carried out the work.

Bridge River stage two (dam) : part 2

The item is an industrial film on a colour print made in the late 1950s. It contains footage showing the construction of Mission Dam on Bridge River from 1956 to 60, intended to increase the height of Carpenter Lake. The new dam structure incorporated the original 1948 diversion dam. The film begins with an overview of the Bridge River development.

Bridge River unit no. 4

The item is an Industrial film on a colour print made in the early 1950s. It contains footage of the construction of the fourth penstock down Mission Mountain, to drive generator no. 4 at Seton powerhouse of the Bridge River project.

Cheakamus hydro-electric development : part 2 : penstocks, powerhouse

The item is an industrial film on a black and white workprint. It continues the story of the hydro-electric development on the Cheakamus River and shows the construction of the penstocks and powerhouse, 23 miles from Squamish. There are shots of tunnel construction and installation of powerhouse equipment. The generators went on-line late in 1957.

Current account

The item consists of three elements that made up a promotional film from 1959. The film is a dramatization which demonstrates how the rates charged for electricity by BC Electric have supposedly fallen over the preceding 20 years. A district representative of BC Electric visits a typical family home. There are several animated sequences, and a few unidentified shots of dam and power line construction.

Dorothy's dream house

The item is a promotional film on colour print, made in the mid 1950s. It shows the planning, design, construction and features of a BCE "Ease-of-Living" modern home, equipped with up-to-date electrical appliances. Footage of special interest includes a view from a car crossing Lion's Gate Bridge and views of the British Properties.

La Joie storage dam : part 2

The item is a colour industrial film from 1950. It shows construction work on the La Joie Dam during 1950 including blasting, excavation, dam fill operation, spillways, floodgates and control valves. La Joie dam was part of the Bridge River development.

Lake Buntzen power plant : part I and part II

The item is an industrial film. It shows the construction of BC Electric's new Lake Buntzen power plant on Indian Arm around 1951. Footage includes demolition (by explosion) of part of the original plant, construction of cofferdam, penstock and tunnel; installation of turbines and generators, official opening with guests arriving on the launch "Hollyburn."
