RECORDED: Duncan (B.C.), [1952-11 & 12] SUMMARY: Recordings related to "Tzinquaw", a musical dramatization or opera by Frank Morrison, based on the Cowichan Indian legend of a battle between the Thunderbird and the Killer Whale. The story tells how the Cowichan people were saved from starvation after Tzinquaw (the thunderbird) defeated Quannis (the killer whale), who had driven the fish away. T4156:0001 - 0003 and 0005 - 0009 are the recordings; related to "Tzinquaw". T4156:0004 is a recording of an impromptu gathering, probably at Frank Morrison's house near the Cowichan Reserve. T4156:0010 features a family [the Morrisons] on Christmas morning, talking about their presents.

The item consists of two audio cassettes recorded by David L. Rozen in Duncan, B.C. The first, recorded in 1977, was to accompany the publication "Indian Prayers of Southeast Vancouver island". The pronunciation of words in the Cowichan and Saanich dialects of the Salishan language family. The recording includes the prayers and songs of the Catholic Indian Mass, spoken and sung by Abel Joe of Duncan, B.C.

The second, called Indian prayers: additions was recorded in Duncan in 1982 and contains additions to Helk'eminen st'iwi7elh.

The records in this series consist of correspondence and reports inward to the Provincial Secretary from the Joint Indian Reserve Commission (Alexander Caulfield Anderson, Dominion Commissioner, Archibald McKinlay, Provincial Commissioner, and Gilbert Malcolm Sproat, Joint Commissioner). The records include reports; summaries of work; minutes of decision; census of Indian population, livestock and acreage of reserves; and two memoranda dated 1869 by J.W. Trutch regarding disputes about Indian lands in Cowichan district.

Copies of correspondence inward to the Lieutenant Governor from the Commissioners and certain correspondence with Dominion Officials is also included in the record. The records are as originally filed. In most cases, the original Provincial Secretary's file number may be seen on the first document in a file, eg., for file 3 the number is 664/76, representing the 664 document received in the year 1876.

Series consists of a draft and revised draft of Russell's reminiscences of her career as a librarian in the Provincial Library; correspondence inward (1 item), 1924; certificates of membership (B.C. Library Association, Order of Good Times); historical sketches of early explorers; brief accounts of Indian legends.

The series is a microfilm copy of a ship's journal maintained by Lieutenant George Palmer, RN, while serving aboard HMS Amphitrite, 1855; HMS Monarch, 1855-1858; and HMS Edinburgh, 1858-1861. The Monarch entries describe Palmer's visit to Esquimalt, 1856 and his involvement in the Trincomalee expedition against the Cowichan People. The journal also includes a section describing Palmer's crossing of the Andes and visit to the Jan Fernancez Islands, 1858. In addition to a photograph of Palmer, there is a typescript of a letter he sent to his parents, 1854, describing a Crimean War battle in which he was involved. There is also an annotated manuscript map of the battle area (Petropavlovski).

The fonds consists of a notebook, diaries, correspondence, and receipts of Lomas, primarily pertaining to his role as Cowichan Indian agent. Fonds includes bylaws governing life on the Cowichan Indian Reserve, petitions by residents, letters, an attendance register of the Cowichan Indian School and subscription lists for a hospital.

The series contains copies of by-laws governing life on Cowichan Indian Reserve, including Husband's Liability By-Law, Public Nuisance, School By-Law and laws governing adultery and property; petitions by Cowichan Reserve residents calling for appointment of a police constable and release of imprisoned native; letter recommending appointment of W.W.H. Lomas as Indian Agent; attendance record of the Cowichan Indian School, November - December 1881; and subscription lists for hospital funds.
