The item is a reel of film out-takes, ca. 1946-1948. Out-footage from various BC Government Travel Bureau films, including "Highway Sixteen" and "Of Mines and Men". Includes sequence at hunters' campsite on Dease Lake, with hunters displaying and packing trophies and filming amateur movies; lumber truck boarding lake ferry; recreational activities (boating); aerial views; sawmilling; sternwheeler snagging logs [possibly the "Essington" on the Skeena River?]; B.C. Provincial Police officer on horseback; totem poles at Kitwanga and/or Kitwancool; regatta.

Eric R. Thomson interview

Thomson RECORDED: Hopkins Landing (B.C.), 1974-07-30 & -08-01, etc. SUMMARY: In a series of interviews recorded by his grandson, Eric R. Thomson of Hopkins Landing discusses: a 1902 trip up the Skeena with his father, James Thomson, of the Hudson's Bay Company; a 1911 trip up the Stikine; and his recollections of growing up in Victoria, 1896-1904.

Frontier outfit

The item consists of a film reel containing edited footage. It has an overview of the 1957 season at the Walker's Cold Fish Lake Camp and guiding operation. It begins with the journey from the Walker home at Qualicum Beach to Cold Fish Lake, via Dawson Creek, Lower Post, Watson Lake and Dease Lake. It shows the unloading of supplies at Cold Fish Lake, construction scenes, breaking pack horses, building a bridge, a birthday party and guests and mail arriving via floatplane from Telegraph Creek. There are trail, hunting and fishing scenes including Mountain or Stone sheep at Sanctuary Ridge, camping out on the trail, Marion Creek, party hunting sheep on Spatsizi Plateau, skinning trophy ram, scenes showing chipmunk, mountain goats, eagle, caribou, hunting goat. Packing up at hunting camp, shooting practice, hunting moose; meat packed back to Cold Fish Lake, where it is butchered by Mrs. Jack and dried. Hunting with bow and arrow, chopping wood, departure of guests, closing camp for the season and horses leaving for Hyland Post. Tommy Walker making a last ride to the plateau to photograph caribou.

Georgiana Ball films

The item consists of 20 camera original, unedited films created by Georgiana Ball between about 1957 and 1970. Original films 1-11 and 12-20 were combined onto 2 film reels by the BC Archives upon acquisition.

The film are "home movies", primarily of ranching activities in the Stikine and Liard regions, particularly showing the communities of Telegraph Creek and Trutch. Other locations include Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Ocean Falls, Dawson Creek, Dease Lake, Stikine River, Mount Edziza and Banff, Alberta. Activities shown include Ball family Diamond B Ranch game guiding operations, ranching, haying, packing and various types of transportation including horseback, pack horses, river boats (incl. Judith Ann), cargo ships (incl. Northland Prince, Skeena Prince), bush planes (North Coast Airways) and helicopters.

Papers and other material

Series includes papers relating to Walker's career as Provincial Mineralogist, 1934-1936 and Deputy Minister of Mines, 1936-1958, including documents on the Wenner-Gren B.C. Development Company, Hedley Amalgamated Gold Mines, Joseph T. Mandy, the petroleum and gas industry, and opposition to Walker by some of the mining and petroleum industry.

Two photographs of Mandy have been transferred to Visual Records accession 199001-008.

Pat Callison interview

SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Pioneer Profiles project : Pat Callison RECORDED: [location unknown], 1985-07-19 SUMMARY: Edward Patrick Callison was born on December 18, 1910 in Halliday, North Dakota. Moved to B.C. in 1912. Learned to fly in 1937 and started a charter operation at Dease Lake called Cassiar Airways. Wor;ked with Northern Airways at start of war. TRACK 1: Describes early life in Peace River country, learning to fly in 1937, and buying his own plane and starting Cassiar Airways. TRACK 2: Working for N;orthern Airways during Alaska Highway construction and Canol Project.;

Prospecting and mining photographs

The series consists of photographs documenting the activities of Anton K. Money and R.H. (Bob) Dickinson, including prospecting and mining for gold and silver-lead ore in the Cassiar district in 1924-1925. Images in the series include: mining tunnels, flumes, sluice boxes, and other placer operations, and road development by the Dickinson Mining Company near Telegraph Creek and Dease Lake. The series also includes photographs of First Nations trappers and Hudson's Bay Company poling boats (fur scows). Locations also include the Klondike-era ghost town of Glenora, and other locations in the Cassiar district.
