Administrative history

The Dept. of Transport was established by the government of Canada in 1936 by the Department of Transport Act (SC 1936, c. 34). The department was the result of the merger of the former Dept. of Marine and Dept. of Railways and Canals plus the addition of the Civil Aviation Branch of the Dept. of National Defense. It was responsible for the development and operation of a safe and efficient national transportation system with air, marine and surface programs. Prior to that, the Dept. of Marine was established in 1868 (SC 1868, c. 57), first responsible for all matters related to sea, coast and inland fisheries, then gradually assuming all duties in marine matters. The Dept. of Marine was disestablished in 1936.
